Well, there is no urban planning in Istanbul, there cannot ever be one, as it has developed since two millenia without any plans and restrictions, rather according to the insticts of immigrants or the municipalities who sold the land to the construction companies giving the largest lump of money. And this photo is a proof of that. Actually i am not sure whether it is wise to present an ugliness in its full beauty, but this is how a part of new downtown looks like from the top of old Byzantian City Walls. The light is weird, it looks like a blue hour photo made in daylight. In fact it was partially cloudy and the "colorful" slums at the bottom had some fresh winter afternoon light on them, while the backdrop of the high rises was dark in shade.

Selam sevgili Deniz,

This is a beautiful blue hours view to Istanbul skyline. Really an excellent photo, and is a good example of city nightscape mode. The great buildings lighting also lends a lovely contrast to the scene. Very well done.
Noel_Byrne (33036) 2013-12-20 1:08
This is superb. Not to sound gushing, but this is one of the finest images I have seen here on TE. Its like two separate images of two completely different places fused together to make a wonderful architectural scene. The level of detail in the foreground is superb, and that alone I would spend hours looking at, (peeping in each window!!) but then to have these amazing towers at the back, and both parts of the scene under such different light! Really a wow from me on this Deniz.
Cheers from Ireland

krzychu30 (15512) 2013-12-20 1:51
you couldn´t find more expressive and...also contradictory juxtaposition!
For me-it looks just great, mainly because of the light.Hidden in the shadow skyscrapers takes on here almost a new, quite threatening meaning dominating over the older part of the city.
Superb look on your city!
Have a nice day

Hi Deniz, there is a very special light inside this pic, what a magnificent capture,a great contrast between old and modern buildings, the details and the colors are truly professional,in background we can see the example of the power of money...ehehe...available in most cities of the world.Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

It is a curious light and I am glad that you explained it but it helps to add to the attraction of the shot. The light is different in the two parts and the buildings are different in the two parts, the band of cloudy 'slums', between the two, links the extremes together quite subtly.
A very well observed shot and one that stands out in the thumbnails.
Have a lovely day,
yquem46 (38752) 2013-12-20 3:09
Wow ! This is really an outstanding and exceptional picture
The contrast of the colorful old houses in the light with the skyscrapers in the shade at the BG is just amazing
Splendid, this goes in my second row of favorites
Have a nice WE, best regards
jhm (157788) 2013-12-20 3:17
What an contrast between the foreground with small houses and the skyscrapers in background.
Almost differs between black and white, but excellent presentation.
These picture is made with good view about these area.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,
holmertz (57285) 2013-12-20 3:31
This is probably the most overwhelming picture I've seen of the contrasts of new and semi-old Istanbul. Light against darkness, warm colours against cold steel, old spontaneous growth against recent spontaneus growth. The dark sky makes the ultra modern area look like a hint of an ominous future.
A fabulous shot.
Didi (60590) 2013-12-20 3:35
Interesting spotlight on downtown with a nice darker background
Interesting contrast between old and new architecture
Best regards and Merry Christmas
cebe (1491) 2013-12-20 3:38
Hello Deniz. Splendid contrast between the colourful houses and the tall cold silvery buildings. Very original photo, and so different from what we are used to see from Istanbul. I think you are perhaps a bit hard calling that ordinary neighbourhood a slums; doesn't look so run-down to me. Bravo for this outstanding shot. Claude.
npecanhuk (76820) 2013-12-20 5:28
Very interesting architecture & urban photograph!
Special regards to the colors, exposure and composition!
Great contrast between highrises & lowrises, modern & less modern architectural style etc.
TFS - congrats,
CLODO (35348) 2013-12-20 6:03
don't regret to post this picture, it is so stunning with one part ully colored and the second one seeming to come from another world. the compression due to the use of a long lens make us think that this is a narrow space.

love this! What an amazing shot, with stunning contrast, but it is the light and colours here that add to the impact and drama of this shot. Awesome imagery! Well done!
Have a good weekend - Brian.
SnapRJW (31629) 2013-12-20 7:52
This is a top shot Deniz. I love the composition with the clear division between old and new Istanbul and the way the light changes at the margin makes the shot extra special as each area has it's own visual identity underlined. Superb... and that doesn't say it all. Warm regards Rosemary
emka (104140) 2013-12-20 7:53
hi nabucco, komşum
this is really stunning shot, although I agree that it is ugly in its beauty. The small houses are not so slum and colourful, more interesting that the big ones without character behind them. The contrast is amazing and it is the light that makes this picture so attractive. I can't guess where it was. Blue hour in daylight, very interesting.
I miss Istanbul :)
chrislo (4097) 2013-12-20 10:02
You managed here a truly exceptional shot and quite a technical feat. I love the way the modern suburbs are plunged in darkness while the colours burst with vibrancy in the "traditional" part of the city, bringing out the cheerful façades of the human size buildings. The contrast is marvelleous, a combination of night and day giving a great impact to the photo. A very attractive and perfectly executed shot.
Romano46 (18472) 2013-12-20 11:03
Ciao e buon fine settimana
ManuMay (36287) 2013-12-20 11:16
Amazing capture, wonderful light and colours momento...and you were there...Thanks! Not only a great shapness and colours..it is light too and its gradients and brights...really a breathless capture...Congratulations...
InasiaJones (31566) 2013-12-20 12:27
I don't want to rain on your parade, but I don't think the light is weird; I think it's stunning! If I would have the power to control nature, I would always opt to shoot under weird light!...
What a contrast, what an unbelievable view! It might looks chaotic, but through your lens, it's a very esthetic chaos. The compressed perspective really gives the impression that the tall buildings are standing among the lower ones.
You don't get this kind of light everyday, you were very lucky!
Remarkable presentation of Istanbul, probably not the most favorable one for your city, but definitely out of the beaten path.
Have a nice weekend!
Corry (4508) 2013-12-20 21:14
Superbe contraste d'architecture. Bravo.
wolf38 (31296) 2013-12-20 22:55
Hello Deniz. City views. Rarely have I seen such a great photo. The contrast between ancient and modern is extremely here. The colors and the light play a big role here.
PaulVDV (31119) 2013-12-20 23:59
The Byzantian town walls certainly served as an excellent viewpoint.
You're not sure whether it was wise to post an ugliness in its beauty. Aren't we always looking for the beauty in everything that surrounds us? If I would ever make it again to Istanbul, I will surely look for this POV.
I love the strong contrast between both parts of the city with a powerful personal attraction to the colourful lower part with its lively character.
An entire part of this district remains hidden in the dark and divides both well lit but highly contrasting neighborhoods from each other.
Here you've shown us a stunning architectural scene!
Best regards, Paul
delpeoples (59426) 2013-12-21 2:02
Merhaba dear Deniz
This is so eye-catching, even in thumbnail, the striking colours and geometries are mesmerising. What impresses me most about this city are the contrasts, not all of them pretty, but this superb photo illustrates those contrasts and conflicts over the millennia so well. Love the tight framing, the impressive depth of field and of course the Blue Hour to die for.
Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful day
Subhogen (4067) 2013-12-21 4:55
This is a fabulous photo...no words of praise is enough.
I think the star of this photo is the light, so great timing, opportunism and observation on your part to catch the frame in such weird light.
Good mix of new and old architecture in your photo. In fact the gleaming skyscrapers at the BG do not seem to belong to this world, such is their sudden appearance amidst all these colorful old houses.
Superb clarity, colors, light, composition and presentation. Congratulations on an excellent photo.
saxo042 (37966) 2013-12-21 6:22
A very strong contrast between the lower, older buildings with all their colours and the very modern hi-rises with their cold colours and straight lines. A very interesting cityscape, both parts here.
ourania (49771) 2013-12-21 7:50
this is an absolutely fascinating view. Your tight framing exalts the juxtaposition and the necessary coexistence of the old and the new parts of the city. The colourful old part looks lively and its buildings retain their individual character in their random and dense arrangement. The new part looks neat, impersonal and suggestive. You've achieved exquisite clarity and depth that make this view look both graphical and real. The play of light and shadow and the way you managed it has created an awesome spectacle. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
macjake (70967) 2013-12-21 9:36
Oh this is a stunner my friend!
Personally, i don't think this is at all ugly! its awesome is what it is!
You MUST take me to this vantage point! or at least let me know where you took this photo from :)
that'll be ok as well as i know your time is limited.
amazing light, so strange looking, but it makes for a wonderful photo.
maybe one of your best! I know you don't think so, but thats the best thing about photography, its so subjective.
see you around
siudzi (34141) 2013-12-21 10:50
Wow! What a spectacular view here! The combination of different architectural styles gave a really interesting visual effect. Perfectly executed image with great details and elements. Bravo!
Paradise (114) 2013-12-21 11:23
williewhistler (16410) 2013-12-21 12:20
the contrast between shade and light, new and old give the image an almost surreal appearance which makes it most interesting and very attractive, the jumble of various buildings all huddled together in the FG are particularly impressive for me.
Best regards Les.
Waylim (25502) 2013-12-21 16:46
What a strange combination of such high rises among all the little and colorful building. What I like also the distingue differences in the colors. The newer building are in this cold steel gray and silver and set in the muted tone in the back and yet the old buildings are in many colors with warm tone and bath in the lights.
Very cool shot with such unique light.
abmdsudi (57112) 2013-12-22 6:25
A very compact urbanscape and the obvious contrast between top and bottom style of the buildings- tx to your notes- but photographically this situation offers a very interesting capture. Love the perspective and depth, exposure well managed with spectacular sharpness but the marvelous colors are hard to ignore. This is just awesome shot. Congrats

KristinsCamera (2384) 2013-12-23 5:25
this is the story the world over, you have summed up in one astonishing capture the 1% vs the rest of us.
the light seems to know what it is doing, casting the highrises as a shady lot, an oversized cast of characters from a sci-fi film, while the lovely jumble of the much less pretentious colorful buildings are tumbled about in the cheerful sunlight.
i haven not been to istanbul since about 1998 and it's hard for me to believe this change. i am amazed at how you managed to catch this. much as these buildings dismay me, this is a terrific photograph.
bona (13739) 2013-12-23 5:36
Amazing this capture. It seems two photos in one. you were very luck with this blue hour light in the background and dayligh on forground.
And I wish a Merry Christmas for you and family.
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2013-12-23 7:21
wow, a classy presentation. The partly clouded sky gives a nice light contrast which is really interesting. The slum is in direct and harsh light where as the skyscrpers are in dream light. A nice opportunity of imagination of the status of there dwellers. A very good composition indeed. Tfs.
claudeD (40844) 2013-12-23 12:55
Wonderful picture with an excellent composition, fine colors and perfect light managment. I like your idea and realization very much.TFS.
With regards from Luxembourg
Merry Xmas for you and your family
Angshu (56760) 2013-12-23 23:30
The light is almost surreal here, especially we have darkness or rather blue-hour-ness in the BG..strange phenomenon and must be shortlived one & you grabbed it with both hands.
The flattened perspective creates a jigsaw like effect with the houses in the FG & the modern glass edifices suddenly seem to loom from the darkness, maybe even ominously
I dont think we have been to this part of the city...
Is this the lens you purchesed before African Safari?
Cricri (123650) 2013-12-24 5:33

This is a fantastic urban composition, perfect quality, great colours, sharpness and POV, congratulations.

very nice urban picture, i like the contrast between the buildings in fg and those in bg. nice colors and good sharpness.

Wow, what a fabulous shot, wonderfully presented in a square format. An amazing collection of architecture of different style and from different periods. As you mention in your note, the lighting is very special and brings out the best of colours to this fascinating urban scene. Excellent work!
A Happy New Year to you and your family!
SimoAle (646) 2014-01-04 3:16
sevy (58) 2014-01-06 1:09
A very good shot full of interest: the opposition between high buildings and smaller houses, the opposition of colors between foreground and background, the so particular lightning.
A shot which gives the wish to come and visit Istanbul.
sayeed_rahman (6459) 2014-09-10 10:44
This is a super photo, the magazines and the journals might be after, something that the business sections of a newspaper might want. love the mix of old past and the future. Important photo.
I dont understand. Did i see Istanbul at ALLLL ?
