Photographer's Note

The amazing Greek Monastery wedged into a steep cliff in the mountains of Sumela outside Trabzon reminded me of the Pueblo Dwellings at Mesa Verde in Colorado in the US where adobe mud brick houses were constructed to avoid attacks by marauding Navaho Indian tribes. I presume the Monastery was built here to avoid attacks by Ottoman Turks? It's well worth a daytrip and the frescoes, although heavily vandalized in the lower sections during the early 20th century, are still in good condition in the ceiling and upper wall parts.
