Ani is the former Armenian capital in what is now eastern Turkey. It previously had an estimated population of around 100,000 people but is now a crumbling ghost town. Apparently the combined onslaughts of the armies of Genghis Khan and the Black Death (bubonic plague) which immediately followed the Mongol invasions, wiped out most of the town's inhabitants and those that remained, left. An all day taxi tour from Kars costs around 85 to 90 Turkish lira and is money well spent. Oh and this is the church of St Gregory built in the 10th century. From memory there were 2 or 3 of them scattered around the town.

I noticed that your country on profile is not China anymore, a true world citizen.
Unlike me, only visited two places in Turkey, you have covered vast ground in this wonderful country. It's good for you. I will continue enjoy your pictures around the globe.

hi chris. nice visit to ani on a beautiful day. it is great that this place is so much out of the crowds, so that it can remain as ghostly as the days it was abandoned. nice colors and compostion. the taxi tour is a good tip for future visitors.

The old church is fascinating and I like the positioning of it within the frame. The rocks in the FG form a good diagonal with the church. A wonderfully wide landscape behind - very well photographed.
Kind Regards, Ann

Hello Chris ,
An superb capture of this unfortunately ruined church . The composition is excellent with the offcentering of the building , and the rocks in diagonal in the FG . I like a lot the contrast with the blue sky .

Ciao e buona serata

Hello Chris. Beautiful old church and very pleasantly shown. Nice composition making good use of these lichen-covered rocks. Photogenic naked hills behind. Best regards, Claude.

In 1984 I've also visited Ani. Then it was only possible to visit these ruins while being escorted by a Turkish soldier. He had to prevent that we took pictures. Imagine 4 tourists wandering around in Ani with a soldier who followed us closely. We had to stick together. Therefore I can't show any pictures of Ani.
Across the gap that made the border between the two countries we saw soldiers of the Soviet Union with binoculars controlling the entire area. The relations between the Soviet Union and Turkey weren't that good.
On this picture I recognize the landscape of a large part of Armenia and the architecture of the churches I saw there last summer.
This could be an image of somewhere in the country Armenia.
A very beautiful picture of this desolate grass and rocky landscape. Excellent with the church not centrally positioned.
Best regards, Paul

The distance between the church and the mountains is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is sshowing the details of the ruined church. The good luminosity is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

I like this architectural style.
Very good point of view.
Perfect sharpness and composition.

A fine location, treated to some excellent compositional work by placing the church so strongly in the frame on an equally strong f/g triangle of textured stones. They really anchor the f/g, giving a good sense of depth to the distant hills.
There was an wonderfully interesting programme on tv, yesterday, about the ancient civilisations of Eastern Turkey and the capital city of Hattusas. I was captivated for an hour!
My warm regards,

A fascinating note to accompany this fine shot Chris. I'm always struck by the way so many old religious buildings lie almost forgotten and yet in their day provided succor and support to the needy. Well worth the taxi ride your shot gives new life to the old church. Warm regards Rosemary

love this composition it is perfectly balanced and constructed to maximum effect. Such a fascinating little church and such a turbulent history attached to it. It looks so beautiful in this setting which you have captured sublimely. Love the fg rocks and tonal qualities. Wonderful!
Have a good weekend - B.

Well presented this old church, interesting view and good effect with tis light capture and these coloured stones.
Angshu (54689) 2013-11-19 1:53
This does look Georgian or Armenian in design with the typical roof structure...Impressive post with the BG which looks desolately beautiful.
Of course the past relationship between the two countries has been controversial to say the least
Didi (54945) 2013-11-24 8:09
Very good frame quality of the view with a very good lights ambiance but a sad historic place
ourania (26236) 2013-12-26 7:52
I like very much how you've used contrasts to enhance the visual impact of this simple composition. The old, abandoned church is well placed at the side of the frame, leaving an unobstucted view to the vast and beautiful landscape. You made the building and the stones stand out intriguingly as evidence of a remote past amid the fresh and soft grassland. The shadows give an additional suggestiveness, the light and the colours have a glorious naturalness. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,
