The Sultanahmet Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii) is one of the most famous monuments of Turkish and Islamic art, the mosque is visited by all who come to Istanbul and gains their admiration. This imperial mosque is an example of classical Turkish architecture, and it is the only mosque that was originally built with six minarets.
Although it is popularly known as the Blue Mosque, its real name is Sultan Ahmet Mosque. Befitting his original profession, its architect Mehmet Aga decorated the interior fastidiously like a jeweler. Built between 1609-1616, the mosque used to be part of a large complex, including a covered bazaar, Turkish baths, public kitchens, a hospital, schools, a caravanserai, and the mausoleum of Sultan Ahmet.
The architect Sedefkar Mehmet Ağa was a student of Sinan, the greatest architect of classical Turkish architecture..
The Sultanahmet Mosque combines the best of two architectural styles. It is a mixture of traditional Islamic architecture with Byzantine elements, taken from the adjacent Hagia Sophia. The central dome of the Blue Mosque, which is 23,5 meters in diameter and 43 meters high at its central point, is of course impressive. 4 immense pillars or ‘elephant feet’ supports the domes. One of the 4 pillars can be seen in this frame. Beathtaking are the more than 20.000 handmade Iznik ceramic tiles, in more than 50 tulip designs, that decorate the interior walls of the mosque. Their color gives the place its popular name, the Blue Mosque.
Light inside the mosque is provided by the more than 200 stained glass windows and several chandeliers. They put ostrich eggs on the chandeliers to repel spiders, hence avoiding cobwebs inside the mosque. The floors are covered with carpets, which are donated by faithful people and are regularly replaced as they get worn out.

this is a great interior photo from the blue mosque, which looks as colorful as india through your lens :)
the red carpets do catch the eye as the praying lady is an anchor point to start investigating the rest. it looks amazingly empty and peacefull. going to the front line, you skillfully excluded the tourist crowds.

Hello Angshuman. My compliments for this great and clear photo. I knew this mosque so far only from the outside. Truly a photo of the top class. I also like the very detailed and informative text. Well seen and presented.

J'ignorais que l'on avait le droit de photographier à l'intérieur des mosquées. Celle-ci est incroyable de richesse dans la décoration et les couleurs sont superbement rendues.

This is a remarkably good photo from inside a mosque. I am amazed by how you have used the light so well to capture every detail (and there are many details here!) with such remarkable sharpness and clarity. This photo indicates the calm and quiet atmosphere that I have experienced in many mosques but thought was impossible in this particular mosque receiving thousands of tourists every day.

Ciao e buona giornata

The wideness of the area is giving depth to the scene. The point of view is showing the details and colours of the art work and of the acrhitecture of the Mosque. The good luminosity is bringing out the colours. Have a nice day.

I saw the exterior of the Sultanahmet Mosque but unfortunately it was prayer time and closed at 5 pm. The interior looks amazing. Nice warm cold color contrasts between the blue and red and the people add scale and context. The stained glass windows are lovely. Excellent sharpness throughout. Tfs!

Dear Angshuman, congrats you did an incredible photo job, in particular your light management is superb. That is a master stroke. You did it with no tripod, a simple 200 ISO and 1/13 shutter speed, wow, and still it is very sharp and colour hues are vibrant.
Fis2 (100638) 2013-06-28 5:25
Excellent frame and colors.
Very impressive picture!

danos (99782) 2013-06-28 7:30
nice the interior view of the famous Sultanahmet Mosque with the interior view of it to be presented superb.I like the excellent light and colour management, the informative note as the clarity of the scene.
PS I think that the quality of the photos in Thekearth as the interesting of its members, new and old,are discouraging. From the other side the 500px is a very good site with 'the dislikers' to distroy it.Especially with the 500px i'm very disappointed.

Looks like a draw paint with rich colours
Very good point of view inside the mosque

A remarkable indoor architectural shot, majestically full of life with the myriad of colours along with the sense of immense depth, space and excellent interplay of light and shadows. This is creative and striking perspective and the pov revealing the splendour of this magnificent structure of the famous mosque and extremely a real eye puller. Wonderfully managed light, the lovely colour saturation and also the way this looks so subtle with striking contrast to deep red carpet. Great capture, Congrats, TFS.

Your presentation of this mosque is so rich and beautiful. The colors jump out, and the architecture itself is amazing. I like the red carpet, the stained glass windows, and the giant pillar. The low chandelier is also lovely. You presented this spot perfectly.
macjake (69765) 2013-06-30 4:49

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
this is a fantastic wide view inside the Sultanahmet Mosque, where we can enjoy its wonderful architecture and its great ornamental wealth.
I have taken some photos there, and I know the challenge of it, but you have reached a spectacular quality of image and of colours.
An awesome work.
PS: I make my second trip in Istanbul in September.
Waylim (25502) 2013-07-29 10:52
Very extraordinary shot. I love it. We only see the exterior of the mosque most of the times. Rarely do we see the inside. My understanding is many mosques do not allow photography inside. The details of the architecture and design is really spatecular. I can only imagine in your original size. Even at this size there are so much to appreciate. Excellent quality and thanks for sharing.
taypejka (1689) 2013-08-23 4:48
The interior of the Blue Mosque is really impressive and your photo perfectly managed to show it. Great vivid colours, good sharpness, composition with a prayer on the right and nice frame makes it a very attractive photo. Thanks for sharing.
I'm planning to visit Istanbul this fall so hopefully will experience the majesty of this place myself.
best greets from Tbilisi
emka (100793) 2013-10-30 9:05
Also fantastic shot from Sultanahmet. It looks so colourful here. Spectacular composition.
