Anyone who visits Istanbul should eat Balık Ekmek.
To translate the name – it’s a simple fish sandwich; Balık = Fish, Ekmek = Bread).
Most of Balik Ekmeks are made with Uskumru fish which is more commonly known as Mackarel
Eating a grilled fish sandwich next to the sea shore is a worthwhile experience. We had ours in the promenade at Sultanahmet along Kennedy Avenue where I took this picture as well :-)
I have done a Black & White version partially desaturated, in the Workshop ....there were strong differences in opinion amongst friends about which version was 'better'...this was Deniz's choice.
Which one do you prefer?

I love the immaculate finishing here. All the details are so sharp and the lighting is so well distributed despite the harsh contrast of light that the whole photo has a very real feeling: something like our eyes see rather than how the camera sees it. The steam coming from the grill is so 3D that i can almost smell the yummy uskumru.
f2.8 creates a nice depth of field, supported by the 4 layers of perspective: the balik ekmek stall, the walking man, the dolphin boats & the boat near the horizon.
Further, i must say that you found a really charismatic salesman, the face has strong features indeed. Thanks to TE, i am starting to believe that these stalls are specialties of Istanbul, as i never see such photos coming from elsewhere in the world. So, thanks for sharing.

Istanbul was great and did not disappoint me. It is truly a world city, with so much to see, including simple daily life scenes as depicted here. Good sharpness and superb color and saturation. The fish looks delicious. I may have added some yellow & green to the man's skin tones. Tfs!

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. J'aime le point de vue sur l'homme qui fait cuire le poissons sur charbon de bois. On voit toute la sueur sur son visage ainsi que sa concentration. J'ai l'eau à la bouche.

The distance between the beach and the horizon is giving depth to the composition. You have captured well the serious expression of the cook. The point of view is showing the details and colour of the fish cooking on the grill. A good management of the strong light which does not hurt to much the output of the colours. Have a nice day.

A sumptuous back-lighting shot and a very good ' food ' photo, bbq fish being cooked over charcoal grill and a taste of summer that smells good too. This is also a good environmental portrait about this proud man and his occupation, an honest to goodness bright face. It' well framed with adequate clarity even in shadowed areas, nice bright coloring and contrast. The smoke adds the nice touch, simply a brilliant slice of life and mouth watering shot. Congrats
I like this version.

Hello dear Angshuman !
Another surprise from my beloved city of İstanbul !
Yes fresh grilled fish midst of a fresh loaf of bread is the "best thing" one can get as typical fast food in İstanbul. And your capture gives this mesage perfectly.
But here in that compo, you've another hidden message : the seller at the back of fisher sells fresh chickpeas ! This was a habit from Southeastern Turkey but nowadays also quite common in İstanbul. Normally you can make very fine dishes with dried chickpeas but now since a few years they sell it also fresh and people eat them like pop corn of simila snacks !
TFS and best regard

nice the street snapshot from Istabul, with the open air seller to charcoal fishes and making sandwiches with them.I like the good reportrage shot from the city but i'd avoided to eat grilled fish from the street.

Ciao e buona giornata

Curious scene, good reportorial shot.
Nice frame and colors.
I like this daily life shot.

I am glad to hear you enjoyed Istanbul. It is probably my favourite of all cities. This is a fine street-shot and so typical for the city, where almost any meal can be such a pleasure. The light was clearly difficult but the strong contrasts only add to the impact of the picture. They make the man really jump on me. I certainly prefer this to the workshop. The partial desaturation doesn't appeal much to me, to be honest.
Waylim (25502) 2013-06-12 15:24
Ah, I can almost smell the grill fish, makes me hungry. Not an easy one to shoot with the strong back light. So much details to appreciate and a great daily life image.
daddo (26754) 2013-06-13 2:43
Merhaba Angshuman. I see that you couldn't resist the balik. It is delicious hot and tender fresh from the grill.I had mine near the Galata bridge, cooked on a rocking fishing boat. Great POV and details. Lovely summer light. Regards. Klaudio.

I find your second picture a little bit overexposured through part black and white.
These picture here is a lot better and very pleasant for look at.
Colours and sharpness be superb.
Excellent composition, TFS.

Nice view of the grill with the fish.
Really very pleasant scene,
Nice colored details.
josepmarin (58357) 2013-06-14 11:34
Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
I believe the WS versión is stronger, because of the unsaturation treatment and the huge contrast with the coloured areas.
But I prefer this one, I found in it a nice painting appearance in the ensemble.
A vital and spontaneous shot, well done.
maloutim (9639) 2013-07-20 1:34
This is a great typical daily life street picture of Istambul seashore. I love mackerel and it makes my mouth water :-) To eat it in the fresh air while watching the sea must be a lovely experience.
The cook looks really eager at his job and I like the inclusion of the banana ? seller pushing his trolley.
I appreciate both pictures, colour and partially desaturated. I like the way you present only the fish in colour. It puts tthe accent on the important element.
pyffepa (625) 2013-07-24 3:22
Now I understand the 'postcard' ;o)
That's a 'Wouaw' picture!
I passed time to examine every detail, everything is so precise.
Your picture give also the feeling of multiple 'layers' applied to form the final image and it's difficult to be convinced that nobody will move, it's 'just' a picture.
Brilliant job, thank you for sharing that.

dear Dada, a very good portrait from the beach side stall of Turkey. Interesting food in my thought. Great capture with such tough light condition. The man was captured with his action from a nice angle. Interesting food with an interesting man. Tfs.
