One last picture from Turkey in 1974 before I return to pick up pictures from 2012.
This is from the city of Kars in the remote northeast. I met this boy serving tea to people working in shops or offices who didn't have time to go to the local tea house themselves. Maybe he saw me taking pictures and wanted me to take one of him too. More likely is that I asked him to pose because I thought his clothes and his belt would do well in a photo.
So here he is, after 38 years, scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Hello dear Gert,
What an amazing capture from your archive !
There are so many interesting details here :
1) The stairs is an evidence that the house is a typical Russian architecture.
2) The tea hanger (tablet) is most probably self made.
3) The printed trousers is the trend of seventies.
4) Last but not least the sweeter of the boy is most probably handknitten by his mum !
Amazing scan quality.
TFS and best regards

Hello Gert! perhaps the youthfulness and the artist is contributing to this portrait and documentary and historical evidence of something from the recording of our youthful years! an incredibly intriguing composition and image this. Highly original in concept and compelling in it's subject matter. Observational photography at it's best and presented powerfully. Well done!

Oh, some of the clothes people wore in the 70s...
Excellent portrait of a moment in time Gert. If he were wearing something remotely normal it might even be poignant, but the clothes push it from sublime to ridiculous! Technically, of course, it is wonderful, with great layered light and nice framing. Thanks for sharing it.

davvero una scansione eccellente. Le alte luci sono contenute senza bruciature.
Il vestito del ragazzo del te meritava questo scatto.
Mi piace molto!

A lively 'street' scene. The color combination not only liven but adds the extra vigour to this shot in lovely warm side lighting with some inviting interests. His clothing and a very intense look straight into your lens create attention, and the tea he's carrying well caught precisely in time. His expression was caught by suprise, a precious shot full of local character and flovour. Thumb ups are the clarity and exposure, perfectly controlled to highest quality. Splendid work, Congrats

Hello Gert. Those who travel to the countries of the world knows the tea boys. It is a work for young people. The photo is really excellent, and one of the best images from the last time. Even light and colors are well represented. Overall, a great shot. Rgds, Wolfgang.

here we see clearly the simplicity of the boy, I think I understood that the boy before he struck a pose he wore his best clothes, pants for the time that was very trendy, but with the dress shirt and formal is not a good match, very nice light and colors and beautiful moment caught...always nice work and quality...

hervorragendes Foto, sehr schön, wie die Farben zusammenpassen. Ganz besonders gut finde ich auch den direkten Blick des Jungen in die Kamera, genau wie bei dem Mädchen mit dem Brotnetz.

I was away on a business trip.
Again an amazing scan from a 70ties shot. Reading your note quickly the first time, I thought that this was already a 2012 shot. But looking closer at the clothes the boy wears, I realized that couldn't be. This is so 70ties.
have a good weekend

You're capturing well this portrait by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the boy who puts a teapot in a basket and sends tea to a customer. The whole is balanced well by stairs, door in back and this boy. And, the shadow/highlight on stairs draws out an additional good effect.

I really like the bit of apprehension in this pose. Even in 1974 those clothes were pretty splashy! Nicely done.

It is such a strong moody photograph. The tea boy is very much conscious of being photograph and hence the reaction of putting the free arm on his left poicket.
The Open door background, the stone slabs on whjich the boy is standing, the yellow walls - give a lot of warmth to the photograph.
Great details of the clothes and the very innovative tray.
Thanks for sharing.

the vividness of this picture is amazing. It is created by the bold colours and lighting, exquisite contrasts, great depth and the directness and disposition of the charming boy. The excellent sharpness is very effective as well. I love the composition of shapes and textures as well as the magnificent colours around the boy. I find the dark interior of the open door behind him captivating, especially in juxtaposition with his glance. A marvellous portrait, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
tyro (23014) 2012-09-23 3:34
This is a lovely full-length portrait unfettered by any background distractions and showing this young man perfectly with his tray of tea suspended on wires.
I think he looks to be quite proud of his snazzy trousers and belt and his brightly patterned shirt too. It really is amazing what wonderful quality you have in this 38 year old photograph, scanned from a Kodachrome slide - the lighting, colours, exposure and sharpness appear as good as many digital images here.

Ps Är du i Turkiet? Ska du resa vidare?

I think this boy has a lot of style. It is interesting that he is not holding the tray from the handle! When I saw this photo I almost immediately though "Bless him!".
Love the round steps they really help the compositon.
Thanks for sharing

another belter of a picture. I love his clothes too. We can almost read a story in his trousers and they are held up with a butterfly buckle on his belt.He is a handsome boy too, very photogenic.Nice light and colours and a simple bg to show him and the teapot off.

I guess i missed this one, i thought I had already gotten to it.
Nice to see you back by the way.
i know i say it everytime, but i can't help but wonder how this people's lives have evolved since the photograph.
and as you have said, its a curious collection of attire, especially with the butterfly style belt and writing in the pants!

I know the tea boys in Turkey, they explained me that tea must be drink in glasses to appreciated the color, as is being made with vine
I like the portrait and the the way he is looking at you
Would be interesting to return to the place with the photo and ask for the boy
