Sumela Monastery in the Pontic Mountains, a photo from Trabzon, Black Sea

Photographer's Note

When I had arrived to the finishing point of my bike trip, the city of Trabzon, and bought a ticket for a ship departing from Trabzon and arriving to Sochi on the next day, I decided to make more 100 km for visiting the famous Sumela Monastery. My way was along the route E 97 up to the town of Machka and then along a highly picturesque mountainous road to the Altındere National Park in Pontic Mountains, where the monastery was situated.

The ascent from the sea level up to the 1190-meter altitude was not very easy, but the descent from the monastery down to Trabzon also was rather difficult due to the very strong wind from the sea.

Hello Sergiy,
Good presentation of the secluded and difficult accessible location of the monastery.
You had to deal with a very strong sunlight.
When I visited Sumela it was foggy and rainy.

Hi Serggiy, I admire your biking abilities. Ascent 1190 m up must be tiring, and way back I am suire was difficult also. But you made it.Bravo! Impressive, how can people (monks but they are also people) can live there so high? Superb shot.

This is my second try for this afternoon. The view of the monastery on the cliff is fantastic. It must have been very hard to reach the monument. I like the view with the greenery on the foreground. The sharpness and colors are superb.

nice the mountain scape view with the rich greenery to reach until the roots of the Mt.I like to see the famous Sumela Monastery with same name Monastery to be found in North Greece,Veroia,when Greek population after the war of 1922,left Turkey and colonized in North of the country.

В тех краях много монастырей на высотах. От мирской суеты , видимо, уходили. Поближе к Богу. Хорошая композиция, люблю такие рамочки их листвы.
Утром прилетел из Праги. Починят систему, начну выкладывать помаленьку.

la contre plongée vertigineuse donne beaucoup de hauteur à cette montagne et semble rejeter si loin, ce monastère.

People in Serbia say, it's always easier downhill.
But and the problems have their charms.
Monastery resembles the Ostrog monastery in Montenegro,it is a great sacred, but I have not been there, and I take comparison from photos I've seen.
Almost always the monasteries take up the most beautiful parts of nature.
Excellent photo, the quality is superb.
