Titus Tunnel

This Tunnel was built about 130 B.C. to divert rainwater. An inscription bears the names of the Caesars alive during its construction: Titus and Vespasian.
The Roman Emperor Titus ordered slaves to dig this tunnel outof the rock so that flood waters from the mountains would be diverted around the city.

Hatay Samandağı’nın 5 km. kuzeyinde denize hakim bir yamaçta MÖ.300 yıllarında Seleukos Nikator tarafından bir şehir kurulmuş ve bu şehre Onun ismi verilmiştir. Bu şehrin sonunda da dağdan gelen dere ağzında bir iç liman bulunuyordu. Bu liman aynı zamanda Antakya bölgesinin ticari yönden önemli bir merkezi konumunda idi. Ancak, dağlardan gelen sellerin limanı doldurmaya başlaması üzerine İmparator Vespasianus zamanında dağın bir bölümü delinerek bir tünel açılması ve böylece limanın sellerin getireceği alüvyonlardan kurtarılması düşünülmüştür.
Bunun üzerine çalışmalara İmparator Vespasianus (MS.69-79) zamanında başlanmış, oğlu İmparator Titus (MS.79-81) zamanında da tamamlanmıştır. Bununla beraber bir belgede İmparator Antonius Pius (138-161) zamanında tamamlandığı da yazılıdır. Bu durumda tünelin ne zaman tamamlandığı kesinlik kazanamamıştır. Burada yapılan çalışmalarda derenin önü bir duvarla kapatılmış ve sel suları yüksekliği 7.00 m., genişliği de 6.00 m. olan bir tünel ile limandan uzakta denize akıtılmıştır. Bu çalışma sonucunda da limanın dolması önlenmiştir.
Titus Tüneli 130 m. uzunluğundadır. Bu kanalın uzunluğu girişten Çevlik’e kadar 1.380 m.dir. Tünelin deniz tarafındaki girişi yakınında da kaya mezarları bulunmaktadır.
Günümüzde tünelin üzerinde blok taşlardan yapılmış, bugün de kullanılabilir durumda olan tek kemerli bir Roma köprüsü bulunmaktadır.

Burak merhaba,
Çocukluğumun bir kısmı bağ duvarları arasındaki dar yollardan geçmesindendir belki, makine edindiğimden beri hep böyle dar ve derin bir yol fotoğrafı çekmek arzusu uyuyordu sol yanında göğsümün.Uyaandırdın yeniden.Kıskandım...
Gerçekten çok güzel kaliteli bir fotoğraf olmuş.

Dear Burak,
thanks for this photo. Show places where warriors from ancient times had passed.
Besides it a dark place you got a nice soft light. The vertical gave a ncie idea of the size of that walls.

Bonjour Burak,

On se sent tout a fait plongé dans ce tunnel. tu as parfaitement gèré l'expostion pour équilibrer les lumières basses et les lumières hautes ce qui donne un maximum de détails partout. Excellent cadrage et choix du format vertical.

Cette photo fait penser à la peinture de Corot
. L'ambiance est mystérieuse, la lumière ne frappe qu'une partie du rocher et au bout le ciel bleu.

Looks like vertical rock formation and this is as if like a pass in the mountains. The name tunnel must mean it is very long?
