ABOUT MY TRIP
I have just returned from my beach holidays in Turkey. Living in the windy, cold and cloudy Ireland I wanted to soak up with the sun. Well as you can see in this photo it seems I took the Irish weather with me to Turkey. Especially that the weather in Ireland was fantastic in this time.
I have spent two weeks (shortened by the Icelandic Volcano) in the Turkish Riviera not far from the town of Side. During this time I participated in few organized excursions. It was cheap and convenient but the photographer inside me suffered a lot not being able to stop where and when or for as long as I wanted. The combination of poor weather and the nature of organized tours kept me from taking enough photos. Yet the place was spectacular and I had a fantastic time.
We stopped at this lake about half way from Antalya to Pamukkale for a lunch break. We had a choice: walk to the lake or get the lunch. I tried to do both.
The lake had a very particular turquoise waters and the beach was a very interesting combination of black and white sand.
ABOUT THE PLACE
Lake Salda is a mid-size crater lake in southwestern Turkey, within the boundaries of Yeşilova district depending Burdur Province, and it lies at a distance of about fifty kilometers to the west from the province seat of Burdur.
Salda is often cited as part of the Turkish Lakes Region that corresponds to the lands that extend across inner west- to southern Anatolia, especially in the provinces depending Isparta and Afyonkarahisar, although Lake Salda is geographically separate from the larger lakes which are more to the west and, being a crater lake, is morphologically different.
The lake area covers 4,370 hectares, and its depth reaches 196 meters, making it one of the deeper lakes in Turkey, if not the deepest.
It is a popular excursion spot across the region or from beyond, the more so due to the hydromagnesite mineral found along its coasts which are believed to offer remedies for certain dermatological diseases. The shoreline surrounded by black pine forests are also popular among hunters, the game and the fowl available including quails, hares, foxes, boars and wild ducks, aside from the lake's fish. White sandy beaches, limpid water and seven crystal-white islets within the lake complete the scenery.
Its peculiar morphology led a number of academic studies to be conducted on Lake Salda. The unusual alkaline nature of the lake means that is one of the few locations where ancient stromatolite algae still grows.

An interesting trip for you
clouds are very impressive
andr3w (595) 2010-05-31 23:10
I like your high contrast shot. The shoreline stretching from left to beyond also leads me into your photo.
Looks like you have a storm coming here with the heavy cloud formation.
PixelTerror (0) 2010-05-31 23:19
Too bad about the poor weather... even though it prevented you to swin into the lake it offered you also nice clouds that create volume over the lakeside perspective, and a little bit of light manages to bring out some if not all the water color
Have a nice day JY

I'm sorry to hear that you met a bad weather in Turkey, I can understand your disapointment. We had some bad weather in Italy too especially in the north, while here the sun was shining most of the time after some short thunderstorms.
I'm leaving tomorrow for a photographic hunt: let's cross the fingers!
The atmosphere is really dramatic here and I'm wondering if the real scene was like that or your skilled PP increased it. It seems the both the clouds and the sand are desaturated while only the lake retains its colour. Really the effect looks like Ireland and not at all the Turkey I'm used to see! (:-)
But those considerations don't prevent us to appreciate this remarkable work where the perspective and the sense of infinite space are impressive. I think you managed to extract the best out of this "winter" scenario.

Czesc Mariusz! Swietna minimalistyczna kompozycja. Minimalizm wydaje sie byc oczywisty, tymaczsem, ile sie tutaj dzieje. Swietne niebo.

Teraz jeżdżąc autobusami, pociągami (a nawet byłam zmuszona isć piechotą do granicy), zwiedziłam mnóstwo pieknych miejsc w Słowenii, Chorwacji i Włoszech. I miałam szczęście - cały czas świecilo słońce. Pozdrawiam M

impressive seascape, very good the scene and the lights, nice the color of the sea.
ifege (10367) 2010-06-01 3:13
A superb photo Mariusz - pity about the black sand - we are used to white ones. That said the black sand under the dark clouds with the blue sea has made the photo work.

The title sounds funny seing this heavily cloudy sky, but it was that cloudy sky that helped you to take such a spectacular photo! Excellent composition and framing, fantastic perspective, beautiful wide angle feeling! Great light management and beautiful colours!

Hello Mariusz, welcome back!
I hope you had a great trip in Turkey, but from this first image I think that we are still in Ireland :-)). The sky is so dark, but fabulous at the same time.
The color of the water is really amazing, the quality absolutely perfect.
Congratulations my dear friend.

denisn72 (8300) 2010-06-01 14:53
The grey tones are amazing. The dramatic sky gives a special aspect to the atmosphere. The perspective is stunning as well as the point of view. Interesting note too! Well done!

Hola amigo Mariusz ~~~~~~~~~~~~>
Although for my taste the clouds are
a little forced of contrast
(also it happens to me) ....
the rest of the composition is charming....
simple and beautiful.
Un abrazo y feliz día.
SWEETFREEDOM (24621) 2010-06-02 10:02
the contrast between the turquoise water and the threatening clouds is very nice, but if were not for your notes i would have said it was an irish beach.
But even in my country weather this year is very unpredictable too much for our standards.
I am very curious of the beauty of this land (Turkey) and willing to see more of your posts about this country.
diomed (13926) 2010-06-02 11:10
amazing perspective of thislonely beach. Great work of pp that makes the sky and the beach almost desatured and with dramatic tones. Great contrast wonderfull light, soft attractive tones of the sea. Nice composition.
subhendu_bagchi (26089) 2010-06-02 12:09
Aha-ha, woooooooow, what a view. Superb cloud and the light through it. The upper half seemed to be taken in B & W, and the lower with colours. Great contrast. The hilly area with silhouetted is the divider of these two. Great light management and so the depth. Outstanding composition. Tfs.
macjake (67532) 2010-06-02 12:59
isn't that just the way...going on holidays, then the weather is the opposite to how it was supposed to be!
well, you certainly made the best of it according to this photo.
looks like you've got the beach to yourself!
love the textures in the sand, and the various colours, same for the water too.
Funny...this really does look like an Ireland photo!
Have a great day

Despite the gloomy weather you have managed taking such an colorful and impressive picture. The most impressive compositional element surely is the beautifully clouded sky. The multicolored sand also is a very interesting natural phenomenon. Thanks for the wonderful picture and comprehensive note!
Leconte (5795) 2010-06-03 13:39
beautiful harmony of gray / blue on the beach very different, amazing sky, great depth of field, beautiful view,
PaulVDV (28771) 2010-06-03 13:55
Are you sure you didn't post an Irish pic here and started a new topic of an imaginary trip to Turkey ? :-)
Look at the bright side of the story: All your friends in Ireland were so happy that you took the weather with you on your holiday. Perhaps they can sponsor your next trip in exchange for sunny weather at home.
Well, I think this happens to all of us once. Hopefully not too often.
And now you can look back on a series of special pictures of Turkey. Not only special, but also very beautiful.
This picture has a spectacular and dramatic look.
The big contrast between black and white in the sky is also found back on the sands on the beach.
The composition is good with the long diagonal line that separates the turquoise sea from the land in b&w.
The photo also has a great feeling of depth.
Best regards, Paul
AKITA (15125) 2010-06-03 23:35
your HDR effect on cloudy sky is very nice,
and blue gray tone on the sea is beautiful too,
your composition makes excellent depth in this perspective,
whole atmosphere is very cool and tasteful,
thank you for your excellent shot,

Have a nice day z pięknej pogody, okolicznościowe Paja.
Urs (14082) 2010-06-04 4:56
Wow, what a dramatic and bold shot, the storm is coming, you really can feel almost smell the rain and the sea is wild - congrats Mariusz, a really excellent shot. Thanks for your critique of my mussel procession zone in Kuala Kedah - I like the graphic as well.
siolaw (38292) 2010-06-04 6:50
Maybe the sun is on holiday, but this cloudy sky is really dynamic. I like also the greyish tones of the sand and the linear shape of the beach providing graphism and geometry.
Charo (51212) 2010-06-04 7:35
Uwielbiam atmosfera stworzona przez te ciemne chmury, w przeciwieństwie do koloru morza. Piękny widok z wielkiego dramatu i szczegółowo doskonałe.
paololg (31448) 2010-06-04 9:18
Ciao dear Mariusz,
amazing sky, marvelously dramatic. The photo has been composed in excellent way, with an interesting diagonal that divides the color of the sea with the color of the beach. Beautiful three-dimensional effect, compliments, dear friend!
Ciao, have a nice week end!

Hi my dear Mariusz
Sorry for my late action as I am exhaused very much weekday. So wonderful great shot!
Great wonderful masterpiece !
Clear/fresh color and very sharp description as usual.
Outstanding and marvelous!
Congratulation on your fine job!
Thanks for your sharing and have a good weekend!
delpeoples (57590) 2010-06-04 19:45
Hi Mariusz, it seems true that the Irish weather was brought to Turkey. But it still allowed for very dramatic seascapes like this. I love the colours: emerald and grey together. In fact, for a photo, I would prefer such a dramatic combination to those of sun and sea. The sky is amazing. However, I can imagine for you as a holiday maker wanting to see some sun, it would be disappointing. So I hope your summer in Ireland is a sunny one for once :) TFS and I wish you a good weekend, Lisa
Fante (5429) 2010-06-04 23:19

informative your narration about your trip in Turkey but as it seem the weather was not so good with you.Very nice presentation with excellent placement of the lake in your frame.I like the perspective, the depth as the colour of the lake.I hope to see some photos from Pamukale.

Te wakacje chyba nie byly takie sloneczne. Kapitalnie oddany nastroj pochmurnego dnia. Swietna kompozycja z ta linia brzegowa biegnaca az po horyzont. Perfekcyjnie przedstawione chmury.

Piekne miejsce swoją drogą, bardzo ciekawa technika PP.

Great mood here, absolute use of colours under this amazing, and terrific, sky...The way you have composed the scene fits really well, a very beautiful capture!!
josepmarin (58357) 2010-06-06 4:17
What an impressive image!
You have chosen a perfect framing in thirds, in order to obtain the deep perspective of the beach under a stormy clouds really magnificent.
The luminosity gives a very attractive atmosphere to your photo, and the color turquoise in the water indicates us that this one is not a B&W shot.
adores (45243) 2010-06-06 7:48
I just love the atmosphere of this one, the low dark clouds, the beach forming a diagonal, the colour of the water, the texture of the sand. Bad weather, for sure, but a great photo!

The colours are spectacular, especially of the turquoise lake, which looks like an arrowhead contrasting with the dull grey of the sand the the hill in the BG. The clouds are really awesome..the optimal use of your wide lens & your superb handling of PP has created a fantastic shot!
danyy (0) 2010-06-27 23:10
