A detail from an ancient artwork on a Lycian sarcophagus within the Turkish Archeological Museum in Sultanahmed, Istanbul. I liked the repetition of the horses here and the bas relief. Shot with available light. Flash and tripods are not allowed. Lycia is/was in south western Turkey, but this tomb was located about 25 miles south of Beirut in what is now Lebanon. (Sidon) It was settled by Macedonians from ancient Greece.

"Lion hunting side.
The sarcophagus is topped by an ogival roof typical of Lycian tombs. Centauromachy statues reminiscent of those on the Parthenon south metopes (stone panels), grace the short ends of the rectangular body, while pairs of griffins and sphinxes adorn the ends of the lid.
The hunt scenes are on the long sides of the body: on one, hunters in chariots pursue a lion, while Greek and Persian horsemen attack a boar in the other side. As noted already, lion hunting (particularly from a chariot) draws on royal imaginary front Assyria and Persian tradition, an appropriate chase here for the royal occupant of the sarcophagus.

unusual sculptures of horses on the sarcophagus. An interesting artistic work. Dynamic scene and moment. Good presentation.
Have a nice day.

Not an easy shot, especially as you probably weren't allowed to use a tripod. This relies very much on close detail and contrast which you really have achieved. Excellent sharpness, great relief and the crop has given it a fine composition.
My warm regards,

The tight frame is putting the artwork in evidence. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the artwork. It is clear and sharp. Have a nice day.

really like this! Your crop is superb with immaculate detail, but it is the shadows that make this so compelling - they add to the sense of movement that this beautiful piece is meant to convey. Wonderful!

Hi Chris Good framing of the bas relief with nice texture rendering. You managed correct sharpness without tripod or flash anyhow, and noise is not really visible here...

I like very much the theme you chose from this magnificent sarcophagus and the way you have framed and illuminated it. You are presenting it with excellent sharpness. It's wonderful to see the intensity of the scene and its details outlined through subtle lines and strong shadows. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

I like the detail shot from one of the sarcophagi in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. I also looked at the Flickr version. They complement each other nicely. I think I prefer the more comprehensive, Flickr version. The carving is exquisite, and so is the photo. This is probably from the same time as the Alexander Sarcophagus, located not far from this piece. Virtually each time I've visited Istanbul, perhaps 30 times, I've made it a point to visit the Archaeological Museum, one of the richest in the world.
Warm regards, and Happy Easter.

Good morning Chris,
A fabulous part of the ancient archeology findings, a carved art details on a sarcophag found just south in Lebanon. Well used the available light in the museum, details shown in fine clarity, horses mingle with a humen - suggesting a battle described, to my humble opinion.
Enkoy your weekend,
