Soğukçeşme Sokağı (Street of the Cold Fountain) is a picturesque pedestrian only street in the Sultanahmet neighbourhood of Istanbul, Turkey, running between the Hagia Sophia and Topkapı Palace.
The wooden two or three-storey Ottoman style houses consisting of four to ten rooms date from the 19th to 20th century, and have been restored under the initiative of Çelik Gülersoy in 1985-1986.
The renovations/rebuilding created a vitriolic battle that was played out on the pages of İstanbul's newspapers, with some experts arguing that the city would be left with a Disney-style architectural theme park rather than a legitimate exercise in conservation architecture.
Personally, I enjoyed a stroll along the quiet, cobbled street. In this shot you can see the impressive Baroque, doorway to the Hagia Sophia Almshouse which stands on the corner of the street. The charity was established by Sultan Mahmud I (1730-1754) in 1743 at the northeast of Hagia Sophia for the distribution of food to the poor and orphaned people in the area.

Hi Rosemary. Interesting note about the different views regarding conservation. The same is happening in Safranbolu as old adobe walls are pulled down and brick takes its place. I remember seeing such houses in Istanbul and they can be quite graceful and colourful.Rich composition with its various architecture and details. Lovely red accent from the geraniums in the sunlight. Regards. Klaudio.

The architecture is indeed very attractive and seems to have been lovingly restored. I like the point of view and the contrast in style between the two sides of the composition. Excellent light management brings out the colours and detail superbly.

Its beautiful how you composed this picture...the ornate roof of the almhouse (quite similar to the fountain in front of Topkapi...isn't it?) leading us to the renovated Ottoman style houses which line the street. I struggled to get a good composition out of the houses in the street, but here your picture is..an inspiration (alas too late!). I had liked how the houses were painted over in nice pastel shades...

this is such an amazing contrast of architectural styles and to be honest I really like it. It retains the character of the old City and looks like it is well cared for too. A superb POV this and such immaculate detailing that makes it welcoming and attractive. Excellent!
Have a good week - B.

Hello Rosemary ,
beautiful architecture , and an especially well chosen angle of view , to show us many superb détails .
Kamilutka (8095) 2014-02-17 4:48
you were very lucky to take this shot with presence of only one person discreetly sitting in the corner. The architecture is fantastic and the left side contrast very much in style with the right, more decorative, one. Cobbled lane visible in between the buildings adds nice climate to this image and looks very inviting for a nice stroll. I am sure you enjoyed it :-)
Very good POV and angle, well handled light and natural colors.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day
macjake (52014) 2014-02-17 4:50
now how on earth did you get the underside of that rooftop so well lit in the upper fg? thats fantastic.
in my opinion it actually makes the photo what it is.
seems like alot of care and time went into that building on the left, and it shows.
strange to see the stone way up at the top, contrasts so much with the other styles.
fine photo from a city walk.

J'aime beaucoup la porte sur la droite et surtout cette avancée superbement décorée. La contre plongée nous montre bien tous les détails très artistiques qui s'harmonisent très bien avec les couleurs des immeubles de l'autre côté de la rue.

Superb image composition, combination of two different architecture styles. The low angle viewpoint is excellent, the light & clarity perfect. I like the very nice details and also it is good to see the sitting watchman, adding some life to the scene.
Very well done
Wish you a very nice week.

Hello Rosemary, very nice image here. I love how you got the corner of the street to be the focus in the composition. Lovely summer light on the buildings. Good take.

On my first visits to Istanbul in the early 70's I stayed several times in a very cheap hotel in this area, It must have been just around the corner from here. In those days this area was quite rundown, so I was very surprised to return decades later and find it so thorougly face-lifted and spruced up. The house where I had stayed had of course been pulled down. This is a lovely, well composed shot with very fine colours. My compliments also to the perfectly spelled Turkish :-).

Bonsoir, chère Rosemary,
Ah ! très jolie présentation de ce quartier. Le cadrage est parfait pour valoriser l'architecture des bâtiments.
La joliesse du bâtiment de gauche est splendide.
Très bonne soirée.

How unusual to see the castellated stone top to the beautiful wooden houses, like something new built around something old. I really like the view you chose here, the building to the left creates a wonderful sense of depth. I like the person peeping out at you too, with what looks like a crown of bright red flowers!
All the best

Ciao dear Rosemary
I;ve read your discussion with Craig and can completely see why you chose this POV, accentuating that wonderful ceiling or eave on the left. The vertical frame has allowed you to very artistically do that, as has your excellent post processing skills. I like the strong green colours and the curved road which leads the eye into the image. You handled the shaded areas effortlessly. A unique and very attractive photo, beautifully realised.

abmdsudi (39482) 2014-02-18 8:32
The architectural style on the left caught my eye immediately and steal the show for sure, with the perspective hovers the eye to the right building offering a nice combination of old and new and the stark contrast between them! Excellent processing that reveals lots of tones, textures and detail, a splash of red is always useful in an image and this works well. Great shot, well done, TFS.

What a super image of this great architecture in Turkey, splendid Baroque doorway in all it's fine detail. You have illuminated it so well so we can admire it(interesting thread to Craig to how you achieved it.)I think the two go well together especially the colours.

This looks a lovely place to take a stroll. The detail in the architecture is exquisite and what amazing detail under the roof. A lovely shot and I enjoyed reading your note.
Kind Regards, Ann

The underside of the overhanging roof looks so wonderful.
Excellent presentation and combination of different architectural styles that make Istanbul so interesting.
Very good composition and sharpness. Colourful!
Best regards, Paul

Good photo of an interesting street, with lovely colorful buildings. The patterns on the eaves of the foreground building show up well.
