Rüstem Pasha Mosque (Rüstem Paşa Camii) in Istanbul’s Eminönü district, is surprisingly in the agenda of few tourists, though in our opinion it is among the city's architectural gems and a masterpiece of Ottoman imperial architect, Mimar Sinan.
Rüstem Pasha who was a Bosnian by birth, was the son-in-law and a grand vezir of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. Although competent, he is remembered in history for having plotted with Süleyman's wife, Roxelana (Hürrem Sultan) to denounce Prince Mustafa, Süleyman's son and heir to the throne.
The mosque is tricky to find. The entrance is hidden above market stalls that line the streets of the local market..Although small, it is beautifully proportioned, and both exteriors and the interior is covered in some of the most exquisite İznik faience (colored tiles) ever produced. The tiles were made at the height of Iznik's supremacy.
There are so many historic sights to see in Istanbul that Rüstem Pasha Mosque is often overlooked but we were well rewarded for our visit to one of the hidden gems of Istanbul.

Bonjour, cher Angshu,
Quel décor gigantesque, notre regard se pose sur chaque élément, et l'admiration n'en est que plus grande.
Un élément architectural de toute beauté.
Très bonne journée.

You have divided this capture into a third of red and two thirds of blue, and you have also included many attractive interior details like the diagonal line of the stairs and the rings of lamps. The man here adds further interest. A very attractive view with all these strong and saturated colours.

Namaste Angshuman. I did not overlook this mosque as Rustem was from my part of the world and as for Mustafa, he was the sun of an Albanian sultana, who was Suleyman's favourite before he became besotted by Roxana.Had Mustafa lived, this great warrior and the soldiers' favourite, the history of the Ottomans may have been different. As it was, Roxana's son was a total dill and marked the beginning of the end for the empire.Your photo is colourful, detailed and nicely lit. Regards. Klaudio.

The wideness of the room is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is allowing me to enjoy the details and colors of the interior of the room at the Mosque. The surrounding light is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

J'aime beaucoup cette invasion des le moment de prière de cet homme seul sur son tapis rouge, tout en conservant un beau respect de son intimité. C'est incroyable de voir toutes ces décorations sur les murs et le superbe lustre.

I am glad you found this beautiful mosque. I saw it the first time more than 40 years ago and visited it again last year. It remains as beautiful but now it has been discovered by at least a trickle or tourists. You have handled the light beautifully and captured all the fine tones of the red carpet and blue/green tiles. A very nice shot.

great picture and not only showing an amazing interior with all its details and colors but it is also well shot scene. The solitude man who probably arrived to the mosque for his praying adds life and reality to the image.
Nice composition and great colors.
Thanks for sharing

What a delightful postcard from Istanbul. I must confess, I lived in Istanbul (suburbs) from 1968 to 1982 and I don't think I ever set foot in Rüstem Paşa Camii. You have done well to include the one faithful in your frame, though I would prefer to see him in a prostrating or at least kneeling position. The colors are lovely and the photo displays masterful photographic finesse.

Nice colorful picture of this beautiful mosque.
The composition is beautiful here taking the man looking deeply probably at the architecture of the mosque. The lines added flavor to this. Excellent.

The saturated colour here shows of the richness of the mosque interior decoration well here Angshu. I like the composition which shows off some typical interior detail, the distinctive tiles, the carpet and the circular chandelier are all given equal weight and importance in your shot. I like the inclusion of the rope too, I remember that women are not allowed beyond this point. A nice TE contribution. Warm regards Rosemary

This truly is a gem. The richness of the colors and the different designs are wonderful. I can imagine spending hours admiring the tiles and other details. It's great that you were able to include only one person in the photo; the visual impact is strong. Wonderful job with the lighting and framing of this special place.

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
a fantastic view inside this mosque, which I have not visited, and thanks to your photo I believe I lost this real hidden gem.
I like the great light and the vivid colors you have reached in this shot, and the sharpness of the image as well. The presence of the praying man is a good addition in this composition.
Graal (97765) 2013-10-29 12:50
decorative elements in interior of mosque are beautiful. Good shot and presentation here. Nice composition and caught scene with alone man during the prayer. Interesting informations.
Have a nice evening.

A huge architectural indoor shot presented to its best effect using the available light in such circumstances and here it positively sparkles, you have done really good with the exposure. The framing is a cracker when the stunning red carpet makes for a good lead in to seal off the bottom frame where the lone prayer anchors so effectively. It a graceful show of splashing colours all round that shines thru the space so delightfully & elegance, indeed a striking hi quality shot with good sense of proportion and tranquil at the same time so delicately created. Gorgeous.... very well done shot my friend and thks for sharing.

I'll have to remember this place when I travel to Istanbul!
Its always great to see the less touristy areas of major Iconic cities, and especially if the subjects are just as photogenic.
wonderful cut and composition, the colors are outstanding, everything pops!!

Hi Angshu, Indeed, it is not so easy to find the entrance to this mosque although the mosque is well seen from Eminonu. I knew about it so of course I went there. It is real gem, specially because of these wonderful Iznik tiles. I read your note in TA, I didn't know that red was so difficult to get. Now it seems that all colours are easy to get but it was not so long time ago. Superb shot, so well composed and with good colours and sharpness. I was late in afternoon and mine are not good.
I like this font mimicking Arabic characters.

what an impressive interior! The colors are eye catching, amazing combination of blue walls and red floors. The decoration is so rich it is a treat for the eyes. Beautiful presentation with perfect exposition,
ChrisJ (99100) 2013-11-01 15:24
I also found it tricky to find but did get inside and have uploaded a shot to TE. Well worth the time to explore. I like the red vs blue color contrast here and the lone worshiper animates the scene. Lucky there weren't too many more people or the mosque may have been temporarily closed to visitors which sometimes happens. Tfs!
CLODO (30597) 2013-11-21 9:03
good interior picture detailing the inside of the mosque, the red carpet contrasting with the blue tiles of the walls, the human presence is important to avoid to get a postcard and give life to your shot
Didi (57248) 2013-11-21 9:53
Very rich decor much better than Egyptian mosques
Very good lights ambiance
If I was there I'll not resist to make a panoramic picture

Indeed, it was worth discovering this hidden gem.
Great capture of this luxurious interior, with excellent management of light, details and colors. Beautiful contrast between the red carpet and the blue wall.
Good inclusion of the man who seems to be scrutinizing the artwork of the mosaïcs.

This is an excellent capture of this impressive interior! You did a wonderful job with management of colors, clarity and sharpness. The scene looks simply perfect and very attractive. TFS! Like it!
