original name is valens aqueduct. you see zeyrek mosque(pantocrator church) in background.
The aqueduct is in İstanbul Saraçhane District. The construction started during the period of Constantinius the 1ST (306-337), and it was completed in 378, during the period of Emperor Valens. It used to tranfer the drinking water coming from Alibeyköy to the city. It is made of two rows of ducts. While it used to have a length of 1 km, now only a part of 800 m. survives.
belgrad ormani ve civarindaki su kaynaklarindan istanbul icine suyun getirilmesi icin yapilan su kanallarinin bir bolumu.fatih'ten unkapani'na (veya tersi istikamette) giderken altindan gecilen kemerdir. m.s.378 yilinda yapilmis, mimar sinan tarafindan 760 yilinda onarilmistir. cumhuriyetin ilk yillarina kadar kullanilmistir. daha sonra dahiyane bir fikirle kullanilmamaya baslanmis ve kanallari ot kaplamis ve esecikler, danalar otlamaya baslamistir uzerinde. 1950 li yillarda bir gun bu danalardan birisi otlarken ayagi kaymis ve altta bulunan bir evin salonuna kadar dusmustur (kaynak: jak deleon).
