Istanbul Trip, Day 8, Scene 10
Ships of all sizes and shapes will traverse the Bosphorus. Here we see the bow of the container ship Maersk Bogor of the Maersk Line from Singapore. In the background is the Vaniköy Mosque in the Kandilli district.
The Maersk Bogor looks a bit dilapidated for a ship built in 2009. The reason I took this photo is the bulbous bow, which looks a bit intimidating. A bulbous bow is a protruding bulb at the bow of a ship just below the waterline. The bulb modifies the way the water flows around the hull, reducing drag and thus increasing speed, range, fuel efficiency, and stability. Large ships with bulbous bows generally have a twelve to fifteen percent better fuel efficiency than similar vessels without them. A bulbous bow also increases the buoyancy of the forward part and hence reduces the pitching of the ship to a small degree.
Yumrubaşlı büyük gemilerin genellikle onsuz benzer teknelerden yüzde on iki ile on beş oranında daha iyi yakıt verimliliği vardır. Yumurbaş aynı zamanda ön kısmın kaldırma kuvveti arttırır ve dolayısıyla küçük bir dereceye kadar geminin yunuslamasını azaltır.

Ahh, the title had me laughing, I love it! :) This is precisely something that would have caught my eye as well. I don't know what it is about old, weathered, and rusted out subjects....but they sure make for great appeal. Aside from the rusted colors and textures, I really like the big push and cresting waves as the vessel makes its way ahead, putting the scene into motion. For the sake of photography, I hope this old ship never gets a proper scrubbing. :) Enjoy the new week. Take it easy.

A great capture, you have caught the bulbous bow perfectly pushing the sea up and over with great effect. Also with the ship to the side of the shot shows how big it actually is in proportion to the buildings.

nice contrast of the rusted huge ship and the lovely little houses across the river. I had a pleasure to see similar scenes around Hamburg which is a huge port as well. Nice to have a minaret as well which adds some more character to the village.
Very well done!

You're capturing well this container ship by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the ship with a bulbous bow and landscape with Mosque and the wood of lush green in opposite shore. It seems to a wisdom of technology's improvement. Although the general public is almost uninterested, technology is progressing rapidly in the place which is not visible.

I'm a big fan of these rust buckets :)
I like that we can see the mosque on the left, showing the true cultural side of Istanbul, but the best part of the photo has to be the under carriage of the large ship.
the way the water is being pushed aside so easily.
fun shot, lots to like here.
