Photographer’s Note

April 23 is the "National Sovereignty and Children's Day" in Turkey.

The date commemorates the opening of Turkish National Assembly in 1920 during the Turkish Independence War. The designation of Children's Day came in 1929 upon the recommendation of the Institution of Children's Protection. Since 1986 the Turkish government organizes an international children's festival on April 23.

On April 23 of every year, children in Turkey celebrate this "Sovereignty and Children's Day" as a national holiday, and is celebrated by citizens throughout the country during ceremonies preceding the day.

Among the activities on this day, children from all around Turkey gather in the capital city, Ankara, and they replace the selected members of the Grand National Assembly. They have an elected president and prime minister and they govern Turkey for one day in order to emphasize the importance of the children in the society. In many places governmental agencies leave the authority to children symbolically for the day.

Or like in this "oldie" from 1971 they take part in a parade. This one is sitting on the pilot seat of a hellicopter of the turkish airforces, povered by two adults !

Bu kare de bu güne ait 1971 yılında Kadıköydeki bir resmi geçitten.
Kimbilir belki 38 sene evvel çekilen bu karedeki bu helikopter pilotu rolündeki delikanlı, gerçekten bir helikopter pilotu olmuştur.

Bu kare siyah beyaz bir kare'den tarandı.

Wieder ein rundherum interessanter Beitrag! Dieses "alte Schätzchen" hat eine wunderbare Ausstrahlung von "damals"... Der Kleine im Pilotensitz scheint ja hin- und hergerissen. Die Kinder sollten eigentlich an jedem Tag des Jahres ernstgenommen werden ...

Fotoğrafı açarken "İnşallah arşivin en dip köşelerinden en derinlerinden bir karedir" diye düşündüm ve tam içimden geçirdiğim gibi bir kareyle karşılaştım.

Mesut Bey, merhaba ! A photo dating from 1971 !!! Such a charm, these old photos - the child looks regal and solemn with his big googles on the forehead, I don't understand the vertical lines dividing the photo in 3 (maybe was the photo folded to make a sort of diptych ?), anyway they were already celebrating the day with seriously, military presence and some dressed on their best.
A precious document !
