I don’t think that there is a lot to be said about this shot. The scene is very self-explanatory. Five photographers found ideal light conditions and themselves. One turned into a model, two are shooting the model, one is looking his LCD screen to make sure that the histogram is correct and the fifth is taking advantage of the moment. The whole scene happened during a TE meeting in the interior of the Hagia Sophia.
Have you seen the shots In Solitude (rigoletto) and In Light (isabela_sor)?
The other TE members that were scattered around in the Hagia Sophia at this moment were anes_lc, annikon, bostankorkulugu and irimi. Now, you can start doing some investigation and at the end you might know who the characters of this photography are.
Yes, we had a lot of fun and yes we were not allowed to use tripods and had to do all these shots handheld.

MarianneS (15338) 2008-02-27 22:15
Each face is iluminated by that light while the environment is dark.
pixellonely (92) 2008-02-27 22:20
Very nice illumination and perfect timing indeed.
zeca (19762) 2008-02-27 22:47
Super!!!

Great framing, wonderfull light. This light reminds me ancient dutch painings, especially Rembrants works. Great picture!
JPlumb (3159) 2008-02-28 0:04
Sounds like a hoot Peter. Your guests in this shot are very nicely arranged, very good use of the available light to give great sharp results.
hgupta (1323) 2008-02-28 0:28
Very powerful shot. I am really mesmerised the way light has been used here and it all looks like a play of light.
Very nice capture and very very impressive.
robertosalguero (246) 2008-02-28 0:28
I figure we should always try to take advantage of conditions like this one to practice our portrait skills. You did very well not only composing the girl but also the photographers to have more action in the image. Light is excellent as it create a sense of mystery and the fact that only faces are seen in the dark left side of the image is very good. Very nice work Peter.
tehanu_f (6896) 2008-02-28 0:39
Excellent photo, Peter. I love the balance of light and dark, faces or hair springing out of shadows and the young girl's self-confident, slightly sarcastic pose against her 'admirers'. They are so lucky to have found such a pretty face to photograph in such a beautiful place.
barrufeto_77 (28886) 2008-02-28 0:49
Some of them are easily recognisable hehehehehe. Denniz is a good example.
Nice dark picture. Well done!
jasmis (57906) 2008-02-28 1:34
Hmmm... Impressive meeting. Superb idea and amazing light indeed. But who is the pretty model???
Thanks for sharing.

I can only envy you for the opportunity to roam in the streets of this fascinating city.
The shot is nice.

Like claire-obscure ... i like it very much. the perfect light used i an original composition. great work.
macondo (18697) 2008-02-28 2:18
Very good quality shot in low light, with wonderful lighting of the people's faces, and nice balanced composition. All attention goes to the girl on the right, who is so well placed in the frame. Very pleasing shot.
wolf38 (31284) 2008-02-28 2:25
Hello Peter. With this photo I feel reminded of Rembrandt. However, the photo is fantastic. It places the photography into the center. Masterfully and worth seeing. Best regards, Wolfgang.
belido (19934) 2008-02-28 3:15
MarcT (20964) 2008-02-28 3:16
That's a superb composition.
A master piece! Especially with the D200 which is not at his best in low light. How did you magage the grain?
donluicu (24724) 2008-02-28 3:32
lovely image, which is half a testimony of your TE meeting in Istanbul

a very simple and yet clean and fabulous catch of the light painting the scene, great moment,
dkeus31 (27735) 2008-02-28 4:23
very nice indeed, are you sure that the remaining members were not on your right or left shooting a ws as making of?

Hallo lieber Peter !
Grosse Klasse. Leider habe ich diese Gelegenheit verpasst. Beim naechsten mal !
Barbara.
feather (51130) 2008-02-28 6:23
Excellent use of the low light for this quadruple low key portrait. I like how the photographers are arranged in a triangle with the model separate. It sounds like you had a great time meeting new friends.
gokanlam (6605) 2008-02-28 7:21
Lovely moment.. The photographers and the figure look great together.. it is obvious that you had great time both altogether and with the light of Hagia Sophia..
Thanks for sharing..
sacavem (18620) 2008-02-28 7:46
Eu ia escrever algo.
Dyerco (10185) 2008-02-28 9:20
Nicely done Peter. The light is low which adds some real mystery to the image. We see just their hands and faces for the most part. Great shot.
anes_lc (14968) 2008-02-28 11:03
:D nice one dear peter ...seems you did the best shots in Hagia Sophia :)
you use in the best way the light and i must confess i have a lot to learn from your shots :)
gunbud (34066) 2008-02-28 12:12
Lovely clear capture of the young model in this tricky light. Wonderful vary tones and shadows grace this beautiful underground photo. All the photographers and their subject are seen in bright clear light that highlights great details.
guillaumejm (0) 2008-02-28 13:42
sure you had pleasant time by there. A very nice light on faces.
lucasgalodoido (21470) 2008-02-28 15:43
azleader (6) 2008-02-28 17:17
Excellent picture, great mood and your capture of that mood. The note is both helpful and interesting.
Docarmo (9639) 2008-02-28 20:25
Gerrit (51130) 2008-02-29 1:42
Hi Peter, the strong and warm 'Rembrandt'-light works great both on your daughters face (she realy enjoys being the model)and the photographers who seem to do their jobs with a lot of devotion and passion.
John_F_Kennedy (43505) 2008-02-29 3:54
Very nice the portrait of this meeting. This picture should be a cover picture for a TE photography book becasue it shows a perfect technique and the idea of TE.
Cormac (26563) 2008-02-29 7:55
You are right that the light is fantastic in this shot. The composition works really well too, with everyone magically spaced around the frame and giving the shot an incredible balance. Somehow this reminds me of the famous Rembrant painting "The Night Watch", with figures light up well but surrounded by darkness. Superb!
jonathan_hart (21274) 2008-02-29 9:19
wonderful play of light ! and funny scene, everybody in action around the model, including you !
wishlist (4133) 2008-02-29 9:47
if only I need one single proof that doesn't matter if your gear is composed by a DXXXXXX or MkXXXXX with a million dollar lens fitted there's only one thing I can do: browse your gallery. That's the reply to your message and I'm sorry if I couldn't reply earlier but my adsl connection has gone on holiday for a couple of days. You are the proof that 1st come the photographer, then everything els.
Excellent quality throughout, excellent light management, excellent result delivered, excellent TE package...excellent..this shot is just excellent! A plause to the model too.
plimrn (21344) 2008-02-29 9:57
Good work getting the light on all of the faces in this dramatic work of light and shadows. It looks like it was a wonderful trip.
Yep I think I've got them labelled!!
spydi (0) 2008-02-29 10:05
i like this composition, well done especially the person down in the left corner, there i can see nice contrast black vs face ;)...
Philippe (11836) 2008-02-29 12:50
Hi, Peter. This looks like chiaroscuro, something Rembrandt would certainly have approved. The heads of the photographers emerge of the shadow, which makes them stand out very well. They also form a nice triangle and attract our attention towards the model. Well, light and composition are really great here.
paura (47184) 2008-02-29 15:36
Wandering_Dan (3449) 2008-02-29 23:14
Hi, Peter -
Great diagonals! Overall, great light and positioning. And a fabulous commentary on the madness that is photography.
Dpbours (222) 2008-03-01 0:18
Okay, this does look pretty surreal!! :-)
Why were you not allowed to use tripods in a dark corridor?!
Oh, I'm now really wondering about the output of the other photographers. Going to their galleries!
You did a good job here with the long shadows.
Have a good weekend!
rigoletto (34279) 2008-03-04 15:53
Difficult place, nice group and excellent light.
When the model is Sophia in Sophia, there is nothing more to do than clicking the buttons.
Oh, i miss that Baroque moment...
euryan (8440) 2008-03-05 0:50
I have so much to say about this photo that it’s hard to know where to start. First of all let me just say that I love it. Pointing out the reasons why seems almost silly because they are so obvious. Instead let me just tell you that I have been enjoying your photos lately more than anyone else on TE. Every post is different and original. You seem to be using your talents to explore many different styles of photography and your creativity makes it interesting to see what you’re going to post next. Thanks for helping to make TE interesting for me again. This is one of those photos that inspire me to go out and start shooting again.
Keep the good stuff coming,
jaywalker (16101) 2008-03-05 14:31
Hi Peter, I will not deny the lighting here is truly excellent &, the overall composition is superb, I must also admit I'm glad I read your note, I thought it was a professional shoot, I have seen the other photos &, I just love this one, it looks technically the best, kind regards Wilson.
abulafia (4900) 2008-03-06 1:55
This is really great stuff Peter.
Again im impressed by your ability to take so sharp pictures in low light.
And a good idea to take your picture of the other members instead of joining them for the portrait:)
Bruno40 (6658) 2008-03-06 2:10
Great photo Peter,
I did the investigation and I know who they are.
the sharpness and light control at 1/8 is amazing.
keribar (43841) 2008-03-07 23:15
Indeed the light is king here.
I am glad to have found this one.
Sorry I couldn't make it that morning I would perhaps be in the same frame.
All the best - Izzet
Emile (20352) 2008-03-12 16:44
Excellent composition with natural light on their faces with a dark environment, very well captured. Would love one day be able to go to a meeting with TE friends. Good composition with the three photographers taking a photo to your daughter. Well done. TFS.
Un fuerte abrazo.
stego (24126) 2008-03-15 17:59
It looks like we have been failing to meet these days... I look at your gallery frequently, but I haven't write anything about them because most of your photos and notes have such an impact on me that I keep postponing my critiques to other time when I am more inspired. It may sound ridiculous, because I am aware that I rarely achieve writing anything much thoughtful, but...
This one features a masterful compo and light. The heads (I don't say persons, because only the heads are visible and that's one of the interesting things about the image) are very well distributed, the three on the right occupying the diagonal and the one on the left nicely balancing the smiling figure of your daughter, whose happy expression doesn't let the darkness of the place appear as gloomy and makes it kind of enchanting. You took very good and clever profit of the unique light an ambiance that you refer so in your post "Dreaming about Love". I am sure I would remind that ambiance even if you hadn't refer it, as it was one of the many things that impressed me much on that church.
Polonaise (5802) 2008-04-07 8:06
One of the best 'photographers' photo I've seen on TE...
It is THE BEST photographers' photo on TE !!1
Absolutely stunning piece of work...
From every possible angle...
And now there lays my problem with this post...
Where the bloody hell was I in the past several weeks NOT to see this photo ?????
"De vorld is full ov idyots" and I'm the brightest sample of this proverb !!!
fotomek (920) 2008-04-22 0:12
great piece of work! looks like a scene set intentionally (all of your 'models' look like.. models, not photographers ;-) besides - composition and technically perfect, lovely mood, lovely light!
best regards - Tomasz
