Photographer's Note
This place on the Eminönü quay in central Istanbul has to be one of my favourite spots for taking photographs. This is my third picture on TE taken from almost the same place.
40 years ago I took this picture from an Istanbul that didn't look dramatically different but had an atmosphere that now belongs to the past.
I returned to the same place less than 5 months ago, when I captured this view.
And finally last month I saw this group of African women and children admiring the view of the Golden horn and the Galata heights.

Hi Gert,
A great image of an incredible city. Istanbul is one of those very interesting and fun places to visit. I like the colourful clothing, perspective looking across the famous reach of water and the Galata Tower in the background. I went to the top of it at night for dinner and saw the whole city from above. Incredible. Thanks for reminding me of this place in your photo.

Hej Gert,

Hi Gert
Much as I admire your work, the layout really works compositionally. Attention is equally well distributed within the frame as they rightly deserved and the part of the prominent landmark, a place for family outing for sure. This is good technique, an excellent street candid as the subjects are natural not being observed or expecting to be framed. This gives the most realistic results. Excellent reflexes and skillful on your part, capturing the moment spontaneously as they are too busy enjoying themselves. Good focus, range of colours for sure liven this spot and lovely touch of vivid red to boost the visual aspect overall Their joyous moment of life probably in its most natural form in the process. Great shot,
Warm regards

Hi Gert,
I can see why you think this is a nice spot for taking photos! There is a lot going on, the people, the see and the skyline on the other side. What makes this compostion attractive to me is that the heads of the people are against the see not the buildings.
Thanks for sharing

Hello Gert,
You're capturing well this scene by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the crowded old town of Istanbul which is visible to the opposite shore of a strait and many tourists wearing colorful clothes. Since change and the nostalgia of a time are stirred up, I can understand well hearing visit of the place where you are the same as for the time passing.
Have a nice weekend,
Kind regards,

Hi Gert, Interesting to compare the photos made in the same place but in so different times. The panorama of the city is beautiful but that are the viewers that make it so fascinating. Wonderful photo.
I must go one day to Istanbul as you promised to come to Poland after that :). I still look for the opportunities.

its always fun to see and compare your old and new groupings.
just try and count all the colors in this one! a cute family style scene. I'm sure if you approached them after, they'd enjoy a copy of their own.

Hi Gert.
First, thanks for the trip down memory lane with the reprise of your two older uploads. What an interesting comparison. This one has a certain charm quite different from the old b/w, and even the one taken in May, perhaps due to the bright colours and the presence of all those women, girls, children evincing such curiosity and the pleasure of the moment. It's always a pleasure to see a photo where the foreground contains figures also enjoying the scene. I think the cropping of this one has been done very judiciously.
Regards,
Andrew

Hello Gert,
this is a wonderful picture of the fascinating view which is now familiar to me that have never been to Istanbul. I loved our previous pictures too not only for the view but (mainly, I guess) for the way you associated it with people -workers, inhabitants of the city, tourists. Your pictures made us connect both with the view and the scenes to which it became a setting. Here, I love the strong light, colours and clarity, the juxtaposition of the two banks, the timeless buildings and the visitors. They seem captivated and this is for them a beautiful moment to share with each other and with us. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely week,
Ourania

Lovely shot, Gert, that demonstrates others' love of this spot as well as yours. And it is unquestionably a wonderful photo opportunity, one I hope to achieve one day myself!
I like the eagerness on the part of the younger boys to see everything here, craning their necks out over the water. Nice moment to capture.

Hello dear Gert,
Very nice capture from my beloved city !
Perfect pov and good compo.
By the way the smaller tower to the left of the Galata tower was the tower of the former british hospital which served during WW I and it was next to the building of my highschool (the Austrian College of St Georg) which I'd visited between the years 1954-1961 !

Hi Gert,
Yes 40 years ago, there wouldn't have been African tourists in Istambul ! This photo gives out a feeling of great excitement amongst the young family admiring the view.
Lovely contrast between the bright-coloured clothes and the more subdued colours of the district opposite.
Best wishes.

Hi Gert
The atmosphere is not the same anymore, but photographic equipment has also improved dramatically since those golden years... I miss the past but appreciate the present technology! A colourful view of the ladies and children looking onto the other side... sky line did not change much there!

Hej Gert
Time really seems to have stood still in this place, the view is still the same after 40years.
Great idea indeed to compare three shots of the same location side by side.
And then Isanbul is always worth a visit, I agree.
have a nice day

I remember an earlier photograph of yours - "Going out with Grandpa". Here we have the ladies of a family with the boys. On the opposite side across the river - a part of the great city is beautifully portrayed. The bright and sharp colours of the dresses in the forground perfectly balances the soft and lighter shades of the buildings on the opposite side of the river. There is a similar effect with the bright blue of the water and the light blue of the sky.
Great quality of composition.
Thanks for sharing Gert.

Hello Gert,
The ability to compare this scene with your one from 40 years ago is wonderful and, if I'm not mistaken, you also posted another more recent photograph from here too not so long ago.
Rather than the busy scene with boats and fishermen, boatmen and workmen, we now see a much more ordered, smarter, cleaner place which appears more suited to relaxation and the enjoyment of the view of the city rather than sheer hard toil.
The view of the city itself would make a sufficiently fine photograph but the addition of the colourful group of women and children in the foreground - all admiring the distant view - adds much more life and depth and interest.
Lovely vibrant colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and clarity.
Fabulous!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Gert,
As foreign journalist came you in different countries, this was a very nice job, but I know everything has are difficulties.
In our western cities when you two year not was than is it very difficult for to find the same buildings.
Also an excellent perspective image, with very pleasant colors with the people in foreground.
Composition and presentation be superb.
Very well done, TFS.
A nice day,

Hello Gert,
The scenery is very similar but the scene is very different. The b&w shot was very much a working scene, then we had locals just enjoying the view; now we have tourists, and very brightly coloured tourists to animate the scene. The world is a much smaller place, now.
It doesn't surprise me that you love to photograph this place. There is a fine view across the water.
I find myself drawn to particular places in our village and photographed them in different seasons, different lights and with different persons. It is so very interesting to compare and contrast.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
Great shot of this location again. I remeber the other black and white shot, that was a classic. You were already there when it wasn't cool. Now Istanbul is in many movies that is out there from James Bond to Taken, and Argo...
It is great see it from the present day and compared it to the one you took 40 years ago.

Hello Gert
Yes, it seems to be a popular viewing spot with a good view of the Golden horn and the Galata Tower. The colours are finely rendered mainly of the sea with the dense buildings in the BG. The people in the FG have colourful clothes which add to the splash of colours

Hello Gert
A fabulous daily life scene from this well chosen viewpoint. Interesting to compare with the WS photo. The inclusion of the people in the foreground helps creating depth to the scene. The seem to be very engrossed by the indeed stunning view. A very well composed photo from the heart of Istanbul. Great job! TFS. Have a nice evening.
