If you know me at all, you'll know that I love my rustic photographic subjects - and Balat is full of that.
Walk along the streets, and you'll find walls and buildings crumbling, full of charm and history. Some may find these buildings ugly, but its pure beauty in my eyes.
Reminded me a lot of the streets in Havana Cuba.
If you're wondering what the title 3 Amigos means, take a look at the WS photo.
I've added a photo of my girlfriend Tosca, our dear TE friend Deniz, and myself. Tosca wanted a cool pose of us up against these walls. Hope you like it

That is such a charming capture of the alley with the colourful houses. The old, even crumbling buildings have such visual appeal! And everything perfectly framed with excellent photo qualities.
The w.s photo is great too.
Thanks for sharing and have a great day.

First I thought 3 different color were the 3 Amigos :) I like the rainbow color buildings and the different pose from Deniz.

Got to agree with you: old, crumbling buildings (and old, crumbling cars, and old, crumbling people) certainly make great photographic material. Of course it's the colours here which make the shot sing, but I also enjoy the details of washing hanging out, plants sprouting from walls and odd suggestions of graffiti. Nice one.
Royaldevon (37695) 2014-08-04 3:03
TE has been an eye-opener with regard to photographing buildings. Certainly beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
I find this shot utterly charming! It is like living history, though we often only see the history in places when they fall down completely!
The colours and the textures are crying out to be noticed.
I'm so glad you included the road and pavements for they are equally appealing.
A beautifully composed and exposed shot.
Ha! Ha! The 3 Amigos look a sinister bunch!!
Have a great day,

I did think this was a shot from Havana! It looks full of character and like you a place I know I would just love to experience and photograph. A place to get lost in and absorb the atmosphere and feeling of agelessness. Superb image!
Enjoy the week ahead - B.
trevormoffiet (3112) 2014-08-04 3:21
Just love the character and colours of these buildings. If it wasn't for the washing one could imagine these as being deserted. Great shot. Even though the 3 amigos are not quite as rustic they still seem to exhibit some character.
snunney (96825) 2014-08-04 3:46
I have no problem at all with these sort of subjects. The buildings are no doubt dilapidated but they have a charm of their own and some individualistic owners judging by the multi-tone paint job. Makes a great study in colours and textures. Well composed and first class realisation.
kasianowak (8709) 2014-08-04 6:04
I thought it looked like Cuba, even before I read your note! You must have been inspired by your earlier trip while taking this photo. :)
I agree, this place is beautiful and your image has qualities of a painting.
Cool shot in WS too. :)
Noel_Byrne (30209) 2014-08-04 7:36
Hi Craig, talk about texture! I feel if I rub my finger oer the screen, I will sense the rough crumbly nature of these walls. The title would be apt for the three houses too, each with their own cheery color. It does look so much like the sts you shared from Havana.
Cool workshop too, that would make an excellent album cover :)
holmertz (50790) 2014-08-04 7:53
I know the rules wouldn't allow it, but it would have been fun to see the WS as the regular upload :-).
As for this photo it really made me think you were back in Havana. I share you fascination for crumbling houses (as long as I don't have to live in them) and these are beauties of that special kind. I would sincerely recommend a visit to Hanoi, where there is an abundance of crumbing beauties.
dta (76691) 2014-08-04 8:09
hello Craig ,
i agree with you . For me these buildings with their old paintings have a lot of charm . And are a great opportunity for the photographers . On the other hand , I suppose that the local would prefer live in well maintained ones .

One of my favorite places of my home city's old part on the Golden Horn.
Nice this capture with old but joyfull painted fassades in Balat.
Those people are real poor but all of them have a certain portion of joy of life !
TFS and best regards

I'm always happy to see more urban grit, although these are not the colors I'd chose for my own house. :-) There is definitely a similarity to Havana with the iron grilles on the windows and the cobblestone street. I like how house number 101 has both a plaque with the address and the number actually painted near the door. The WS is cool, too. :-)
emka (94608) 2014-08-04 14:37
Hello Craig, this part looks very warn and in bad state even for Balat. It looks abandoned in fact. The last house on the right is in better state, even with laundry. Did you used tripod to make the photo of the three amigos? But why so serious? Where are the smiles? But such a pleasure to see you all on the photo. Pity I wasn't there too.
Lately I guided Internet friends in Warsaw (and tomorrow I will meet Chris), and I was thinking how we met two years ago. These meeting is the most wonderful part of TE.

Interesantan tekst o starim kucama ...
Dobar snimak i kontrast, lepo pokazana stara kuca sa gvozdenim resetkama na prozore.
Dobar rad i kompozicija, lepe boje.
An interesting article about old houses ...
Good video and contrast nicely demonstrated an old house with iron bars on the windows.
Good work and composition, beautiful colors.
All the best.
Periko (4750) 2014-08-04 22:45
Beautiful picture, though I liked the workshop more.
I agree with you. The real face of a city is more interesting than tourist areas.
berek (49364) 2014-08-04 23:43
What image and superb view and capture any component made on these fronts with rusty iron fence and such wonderful colors, beautiful clothes hanging.
Mics (936) 2014-08-05 1:23
Decrepit buildings?...yes, they exude certain charm in some strange ways. The colors here is one conversation piece. :)

Hello dear friend
shots of this kind bring memories from

superb image for those who search

for a while

You're Absolutely right, I at first thought that these were facades of Havana, by deterioration and vivid colors, but it is true that in Istanbul, there are neighborhoods with homes badly damaged, the image is magnified and has a fantastic graphics .
Splendid range of colors.
Also both sharpness, such as lighting are great.
Well taken photo. I like it
Enjoy a nice day.
Graal (102482) 2014-08-05 10:14
amazing theme you captured. Amazing partial destroyed houses. Fine palette of colors of facades. Good shot - here and in WS with amigos.
Have a nice evening.

The Three Amigo's, where?? I was hoping to see Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Steve Martin! lol Great WS pic of you three, glad to know Deniz was such a great host and took you around places like this...what a cool street!
Sure, it could easily pass for one of your Havana shots...which is one of the things I most enjoy about these types of subjects, they can be found in many parts of the world. This trio of colors is outstanding within this framework, you have yourself a couple of fun "amigos" with these pics. And of course, the deteriorating exteriors hold so much appeal...and peel. :)
Rustic and faded charm, an awesome assembly and treat for the seekers off the beaten paths. Enjoy the rest of the day/evening. Take it easy.
Cheers from hot and humid PHX,

Good grotty take here, definitely rustic situation and feel of this faded beauty. Love the way you have composed this with the off-centre sandwiched green in between to hold the eye as strong anchor but doesn't dominate. This is the sort of image that usually comes to my mind when people talk about the charms of a place in the good old days...
Gobsmackingly gorgeous. Superb processing.... really is like a painting. Wish it was mine! Congrats
annjackman (21813) 2014-08-06 1:11
A great subject with its rustic charm. The colours and windows remind me of Cuba too. The washing hanging over the street is a nice element showing us that the street is occupied.
A lovely shot with impressive detail.
Kind Regards, Ann
Cricri (117425) 2014-08-06 8:34
npecanhuk (74542) 2014-08-06 19:50
Yes, I know you love going to such places and taking this kind of pictures, even when you have to risk yourself in dangerous "barrios" in Santiago de Chile! LOL
I also took a look at the WS to understand the title! I liked that!
And this, yes it's attractive and you used well all the elements to construct something truly interesting!
Special regards to the colors, exposure and composition!
TFS - congrats,
PiotrF (16730) 2014-08-07 10:12
Mysterious, abandoned place...
3 colors and 3 friends - good title
Excellent sharpness and the overall technical features.
Very nice work ( x 2 )!
Angshu (56750) 2014-08-20 0:54
I liked the 3 amigos...great group portrait of 3 people who seem to be busy not to look towards the camera and be candid :-)...I see Deniz with a mouche and a small beard..new in 2014 I think!
Seeing these buildings in your picture I knew it had to be Balat...the neighbourhood had a lot of character, and maybe more similar to my country than perhaps the rest of Istanbul was
