Pronounced as 'Wan', this castle sits close to Lake Van to the north behind me here. Taken looking south. The town was destroyed during WWI & rebuilt 5 km inland. From Wikipedia:
"The Fortress of Van (Armenian: Վանի Բերդ, also known as Van Citadel, Turkish: Van Kalesi or Kurdish: Kela Wanê) is a massive stone fortification built by the ancient kingdom of Urartu during the 9th to 7th centuries BC, and is the largest example of its kind. It overlooks the ruins of Tushpa the ancient Urartian capital during the 9th century which was centered upon the steep-sided bluff where the fortress now sits. A number of similar fortifications were built throughout the Urartian kingdom, usually cut into hillsides and outcrops in places where modern-day Armenia, Turkey and Iran meet. Successive groups such as the Armenians, Romans, Medes, Achaemenid and Sassanid Persians, Arabs, Seljuks, Ottomans and Russians each controlled the fortress at one time or another. The ancient fortress is located just west of Van and east of Lake Van in the Van Province of Turkey."

Fantastic view of the ancient fortress. The diagonal framing with the castle between the grassy foreground and the vivid blue sky is perfect. The good light has provided beautiful details with excellent sharpness. The moon is definitely a big bonus. A beautiful composition to accompany your informative note.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your evening.

an impressive looking castle this and so unusual in shape and construction. It looks huge and quite imposing in this setting. Love the moon popping up above the ramparts.

This is a great shot of this ancient fortress. The addition of the moon over the top of the fort adds a nice point of interest for the shot. The lighting is great and the photo has fine sharpness and color.

hello Chris, I didn't know that there is such fantastic castle close to Van lake. Amazing structure, specially this upper part, a bit similar to what Gert showed from Yemen. What a place to visit! Nice composition with the moon. Gorgeous colours.

bellissima diagonale per questo magnifico castello.
Tre fasce di colore ben distinte e la luna che appare timidamente, una bella composizione.

Excellent presentation of the Fortress of Van that I've visited in summer 1984.
Beautiful view upwards.
Great to see how rock and walls blend together.
The moon is an extra bonus.
Best regards, Paul
