Far from the vibrant streets of Istanbul, and from the crazy beach life of Alanya, in the depths of Eastern Anatolia near Kars, you can visit Ani, the medieval capital of the Armenian Kingdom. About 200,000 people were living there, and at the height of its splendor it was able to rival cities like Baghdad and Constantinople.
From the ruins one can easily see the Akhurian River, visible in the picture, which separates Turkey from Armenia.
Due to the tensions between the two countries, visiting Ani was serious business up to a few years ago and photography was not permitted.
Now things are easier, although some areas of Ani are still off-limits, and two military bases still face each other on the two sides of this beautiful valley.

I visited Kars and Ani in 1984. At the time Ani was on the border with the former Soviet Union. And as your write photography was forbidden then.
This is the view I had from the Turkish side with Soviet soldiers at the other side of the gap. A Turkish soldier accompanied us all the time and secretly photographing was impossible.
So I don't have pictures of my visit of Ani.
This is the first time I see a photo of that border and it brings back a lot of pleasant memories of my trip.
It's a very beautiful landscape that you captured well with the meandering river.
Best regards, Paul

la vallée est un peu sombre, mais l'ambiance très particulière, un peu mystérieuse, inquiétante.
Les jeux de lumières finissent de sculpter le paysage.

The color values of your photo are great, showing us this magnificent place. Sun shining through clouds is adding it's flavor too.
I really like this one.
