Road to Palandoken, a photo from Erzurum, East Anatolia

Photographer's Note

Taken late morning with strong backlight. The black specks on the posts and side of the road are birds but here my focus was on the linear perspective of the road. Polarized to cut reflections of the icy pools of meltwater. I walked to the end of the powerlines so there are none obstructing the fg. At left is a military reserve with 'keep out' signs in Turkish. The bg mountain is Palandoken, a leading ski resort. I must get the public bus up there one day.

Hello Chris,

By now it must have started to warm up a little, even in Erzurum. I had noticed the lack of telephone and power lines (is there cell phone service outside Erzurum yet?). For a backlit shot the exposure is excellent.

Hello Chris,
This snowy view from Erzurum is beautiful with crisp details and good light. I like the white balance which makes the snow look really white (not yellowish or blueish).
Teaching English in Erzurum will probably be a life time experience for you, as it will give an unforgettable, long and snowy winter to you. Istanbul doesn't receive so much snow, so we can look at this view in a romantic manner, while i can imagine how difficult life is there actually. Palandöken is a very famous ski resort, so yes, it would be a nice hobby for you.

Hi Chris,

The length of the road is giving depth and perspective to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the mountains. A good management of the backlight which does not hurt to much the output of the colors. Have a nice day.

WoW! that is snowy! Looks beautiful though especially under blue skies. Never seem to get those when it snows in the UK just gloomy and flat. Superbly managed light here in this enticing and stunning image. Excellent!

Hello Chris,

It's fortunate that you know enough Turkish to understand the 'Keep-Out' signs, or are they represented pictorially as well?
As I said previously, this is not the sort of shot I would have expected from Turkey. I am learning so much about other countries!
You have used a fine viewpoint, the road leading nicely into the shot and the fences creating a good sense of perspective.
The details are just what you would expect from a well-used road, churned snow and tracks, a good contrast with the virgin snow.
Good composition, very much using the rule of thirds.

It will be interesting to see your shots from the mountain regions. Are you a ski-er?

Hi Chris,
this is very well captured winter scene. The road might look quite scruffy but I find it actually interesting. It adds some contrast for this overwhelming whiteness around. Very nice sky as a background.

a volte in fotografia si ottengono ottimi scatti con delle buone intuizioni e io ritengo che in questa foto l'aver ripreso un paesaggio innevato - altrimenti banale - mettendo in primo piano la strada che appare dirompente nella composizione sia il pregio maggiore.
Ne è nata una composizione che a me piace per la sua originalità.

Wow, a ski resort in Turkey. I must admit that it's not the first place I'd think of to have ski resorts. But you learn something new every day. Beautiful perspective and converging lines. The snow has a wonderful texture and the mountains are beautiful. ncie work.
