Migrant Farm Workers, a photo from Ankara, Central Anatolia

Photographer's Note

This shot is taken in a carrot cultivation area in Beypazari region. The seasonal migrant workers are from Mardin area. The following information is an excerpt from the Annual Report 2011, prepared by The Bernard van Leer Foundation:

"Every spring, thousands of the poorest families in Turkey, mostly living in the east and southeast, start a process of migration to various agricultural areas in the west, south and north where they work as migrant farm workers for private landowners.

Typically poor and with low levels of education, seasonal migrants are one of the most disadvantaged groups in Turkey. They are not protected by labour laws and are often not paid a living wage. We estimate that 125,000 children migrate seasonally with their families, and their health suffers enormously. BvLF-funded research across nine camps found that young children were almost always sick and diarrhoea was rampant. These problems are rooted in poor physical conditions."

And as far as it comes to the picture- you´ve chosen good POV to document this scene.The image has also superb,well-saturated colors.

great job, perfect framing, bags of carrots lead the eye toward the beautiful valley, great colors and sharp, I feel sorry for these poor people forced to migrate and surely with a meager salary...this is the world..full of injustice...but we must not lose hope for a better one...

The farmers rest under the hot sun. I like the sacks lead the eye and increase the depth sensantion. Magnificent colours and light.

Hello Suleyman,
a beautiful landscape with morbid slopes and lovely colours. The light is bright and delightful, at parts it plays with the shadows of the clouds offering fascinating variations to the landscape. The amazing sense of depth and capture of textures, the excellent lighting draw us into the picture, close to the migrant workers who must feel tired and lonely and could surely use some company and some attention. It's great that you are making their existence and conditions of life known, that you bring them into our thoughts with this wonderful photo. I wish they believed they deserve a better life and that they had hope and help to build it. You 've done so well with this my friend. Thank you!

Wonderful calm and peaceful landscape, this is extremely beautiful farm land as the strength of this image lies on the splendid compostion, depth and perspective you have achieved with effective closeness to the focal of interest. The eyecatching row of white sacks lead in with many elements of great interests along the way.
