I briefly met this elderly gentleman during a visit last September to the Turkish World Heritage city of Safranbolu. I asked him for permission to take a picture and he kindly obliged. I was pleased with his relaxed attitude to posing.
I will post two more photos of people living in this world heritage as workshops.
Safranbolu in northern Anatolia, a few hours' journey from the Black Sea, is a medieval city which for hundreds of years was an important trading place for caravans between Europe and Central Asia.
Now I have posted 800 photos on TE since joining this site in 2007. I have seen many others coming and going during this time. How long I will stick around is hard to tell. Sometimes I get fed up, especially when there are childish quarrels about ridiculous matters, but most of the time I enjoy the feedback from nice people all over the world. I find it exciting that my photos are seen by hundreds, sometimes thousands of persons from Australia to Iceland, from Brazil to Japan. A large part of the pictures I have shown here were scans of old slides. Before Trekearth only a handful of family members and friends had ever seen them.

Hello Gert!you have caught a very spontaneous and fresh scene, with the old man sat on the , looking at a side, in a very special atmosphere.
A good quality of image, a great sharpness and a few managed-well colors, they make a very interesting composition.
Compliments for 800th post

first of all, my congratulations on your 800th post!
before I leave for work (yes, I do work on Sundays) I want to leave a comment to this photo which - in my opinion - conveys a very positive attitude to life and a very good (and relaxed!) mood :)
I like the look of this man's eyes. It's the photo to which one can return and look at many times.
warmest greetings from cold frosty Moscow,
PS. I FULLY agree with every word you said in the Note re "childish quarrels" and getting "fed up".. !

Yes, I agree with you, he is a good 'poser'.The expression is relaxed and friendly..the background colour is beautiful.
800..,2007.. wow, that's a long time.. congratulations! :-D
I'm relatively new here. But you are one of my old friends from my beginning time, I enjoy your great sense of humour and my chattering about anything or everything comes into my mind with you.. you are intelligent, well travelled, knowledgeable, kind and friendly.... a great photographer on any site. But I do prefer you stay.. I just arrived:-D Actually, I was leaving several times as well, but exactly as the reason made you stay..I'm still around. But if you do leave, remember to tell me where you are going..:-). I can still carry on to have a look your old film photos..

Congratulations on 800 photos! This warm portrait is a sweet one to share on this occasion. This man looks kind, and I like his simple surroundings. Nice workshop photos, too.

I like very much this portrait not only because it's a well composed, well lit and clear picture but also and mainly because of the eye contact, the confidence and generosity of the gentleman, his restraint but sincere and lovely smile. You have placed him superbly in the frame and the angle of your capture (which might have been selected due to the backdrop) has played a role in making the portrait more interesting and the subject more expressive. I don't know how much time you spent there but there's clearly mutual respect and sincerity between you, you must have had a similar smile while taking the picture. Your workshop pictures are great too. Congratulations and thank you for this and your 799 other photos (many more if we count the workshops!), for the kind comments and advice, for bringing in so much experience and care.
All the best, have a lovely week,

Hi Gert. You came to the site after me and already you got to 800!My felicitations for such dedication. I concur with your sentiment about the shenanigans that go on and I think the best thing is to stay clear of the petulant types and just do what we like to do- post our photos and keep in contact with people with whom we have a certain rapport. It please me that when I look at your list of countries I see that Albania and Turkey are two, apart from Sweden, which you have represented the most often. These two are countries which are dear to me also. As is this fine gentleman with his friendly visage and cared for appearance. Keep posting Gert for without your energy and affection towards certain parts of the world, TE would be much poorer. Best wishes. Klaudio.

Congrats on your 800th along with this picture, WS picts and your narratives well noted;
A brilliant portrait. You have really caught something special a rare opportunity to shoot this one I am certain of a proud looking man probably in his 80s that has seen enough life from this old city. I love the way he is 'posed', the way he looks so relaxed and his body lingo. It's strong, dignified and it's the intensity, the way he is looking straight eye-level into the lens gives a more intimate feel, is the most attractive element being the strongest point in my opinion. The hint of smile is great too. Pin sharp image, good color rendition, fantastic full of character detail and the 'feel' in the eyes. Importantly, it's always interesting to see photos of cultures so different than what we are accustomed to as shown. This is simply a fabulous piece of work with effective treatment of a charming old time portrait. TFS

Congratulations on 800 images and the amount of critique provided to others at the same time. You have good staying power. It is difficult to post images as well as be prolific in meaningful critiques.(Hur många timmar på TE för varje postat bild?)
The image is well composed. A nice friendly subject.
Highmountains (2255) 2012-11-12 22:26
Its a relaxed pose. The eyes and the expressions are wonderfully expresed. It is so very reflective of the world that has changed and passed by.
There is fantastic depth and sharpness in the portrait.
I was tempted to have a close-up of the left arm - the wrist watch and the walking stick... amazing.
There is a pride and self esteem associated with the aged and the experienced... we forget about our parents, where so much respect is due... This photograph gives me a feeling of pride, his people have kept him happy.
Thanks for sharing, Gert.
Congratulations on your 800th !! Wao !

You have given us a fine note here, not just about this interesting World Heritage city of Safranbolu and its inhabitants, but also about your sentiments regarding TrekEarth - with all of which I entirely agree. I dislike it when good photographers and interesting people leave this site, particularly when the cause of their leaving is due to petty disagreement or some trivial misunderstanding.
I think that the camaraderie and the potential learning experience which this site offers, both from the point of view of the art of photography and the wider appreciation of our World in general, are good enough reasons for me to hang around here for a while longer and I certainly hope that you will too.
To your pictures: a fine trio of photographs, one taken "on the fly" and a fine candid shot of the two ladies chatting on a rooftop, and the other two obviously taken with the consent of the subjects, your main picture showing a very proud looking elderly gentleman, "pleased as Punch" to have his photograph taken, and the other showing in considerable detail an artisan plying his trade as a shoemaker.
All three pictures are perfectly taken with excellent details and with lovely vibrant colours and well illustrate this interesting heritage city.
P.S. And, of course, congratulations for having had the tenacity to have stayed here long enough to post 800 photographs!
