I made this picture mid seventies in the beautiful Black-Sea city Safranbolu.
This man (who unfortunaetly died a few years ago) was the master of the village. İn his small workshop within an old building complex, he repaired almost everything. From clocks to locks ; from electrical appliances to furniture ; from radio receivers to sharpening of knives and scissors.
When I was strolling in the garden of this old building he was just smoking his cigarette and drinking his first caffe of the day. He was first a little bir irritated but afterwards we got friends fo many years untill his death.
With him, an episode is been closed. This episode was been called aera of masters with 1001 skills !
This entry is been scanned from a b&w print.
Bu kareyi bindokuzüzyetmişbeş yılında Karadeniz bölgesinin güzel şehiri Safranboluda çekmişim.
Bu kişi (birkaç sene evvel vefat ettiğini öğrendim) Nurettin Conkoğlu, Safranbolunun on parmağında on marifet büyük ustası.

Lovely capture and especially so in black and white. These images are always quite poignant when we hear that the people in the image have passed on. I like the expression on this mans face a lot, its very amusing and he looks like quite a character. He looks a lot younger than his 70's too!
All the best

Bonjour, cher Mesut,
Cette photographie de l'année 1975 n'a rien perdu de son charme.
J'aime beaucoup le regard de cet homme en train de déguster son café !
Très bonne journée.

Merhaba dear Mesut
What a delightful photo that has withstood the test of time. A characteristic, artistic piece of photography that is more of a historical document than a happy snap. I love how the man looks at us over his cup of hot coffee. His moustache is adorable and the B&W is beautifully rendered and contrasted. Well done.

Another wonderful glimpse back in time. A shot that is both fascinating and full of character, plus your commentary makes it come to life, even if this wonderful man is now a memory. A classic image and compelling story in B&W. Excellent!

Keep the oldies coming: I love 'em! In this example, it's the eyes peering at you over the top of his spectacles that make the shot special. He obviously caught you at it, just as you thought you were getting a candid. Nice to know that you struck up an acquaintance with him.

great portrait, you captured the man with a great pose and face expression. Black and white makes a great effect. The quality is amazing for such old scan especially.
Have a great weekend,

Your B&W shots really stand out, this one I love the pose, the expression and eye contact. The age of this shot makes it even more interesting for me, and the quality remains outstanding.

I'm a little surprised to hear that this man is drinking coffee.
During my visits of Turkey in the early 80-s I saw everyone drinking tea. Tea was drunk from a glass, not from a cup like here on the photo.
And I saw almost all men smoking cigarettes.
A cigarette is present on this picture.
I remember long bus journeys with the interior full of smoke :)
A Turkish man who lives in Belgium told me that meanwhile in Turkey also many anti-smoking campaigns have been held. Successfully he said.
I like the way how this man looks over his glasses. A look a bit suspiciously at the photographer. But afterwards you became friends.
Best regards, Paul

A nice candid shot. The highlights on his arm are a little bright but I'm guessing this image is a scan of an actual photo? It shows some street photography technique and skill!

Great timing to take the photo, just at the moment ,( supposed to be a relaxed one), of smoking and eating coffee, like your serious look, not disturbed, perplex, would say
Moving to know abour friendship and that he died
Such kind of "meneded all men" still exist in Argentina, sadly few ones

Interesting story of your friend, who was nicely and spontaneously captured in this shot. Good light and shades.

Hello dear Mesut,
I like very much this portrait as well as your note that gives us useful information on this able craftsman, his place in the village and your admiration of him. Your picture is full of spontaneity, directness, interaction and interest. A simple daily habit and a meaningful look full of character tell us a lot about your model's character. The simple range of greys and the uncomplicated backdrop enhance even more the impact of his intriguing gaze. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,
