Artemis of the Wildland, Mistress of Animals
I have been posting too many "fresh" photos recently. It is time to return to my vaults for some historic moments. This portrait of Artemis was taken in September 1985 at the Ephesus Archeological Museum in Selçuk, Turkey.
In Greek mythology, Artemis is the daughter of Leto and Zeus, and the twin of Apollo. She is the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt and wild animals, and fertility. Artemis was worshiped in most Greek cities but only as a secondary deity. However, in Asia Minor she was a prominent deity. In Ephesus, a great temple was built in her honor, which became one of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World". But at Ephesus she was worshiped mainly as a fertility goddess, and was identified with Cybele the mother goddess of eastern lands. The cult statues of the Ephesian Artemis differ greatly from those of mainland Greece, where she is depicted as a huntress with her bow and arrows. Those found at Ephesus show her in the eastern style, standing erect with numerous nodes on her chest. There have been many theories as to what they represent. Some say they are breasts, others that they are bulls' testes which were sacrificed to her. The true interpretation remains uncertain, but it is clear they represent fertility.

Impressive shot of the Greek Goddess.I was not aware that Turkey also possess the Greek legacy of old times.Truly a nice and informative image .Very well done.TFS.
PS : Maidan is the same as meydan in turkish. The Indian language URDU has been greatly influenced Persian,Arabic and Turkish vocabularies.Hence we have a great number of words of their origin.

Nice take of this historical statue from Turkey. We see lots of statues in our travels and can only appreciate the beauty of them but it is nice to hear about the symbolism behind them which you have explained very interestingly in your note. Nice sharp and clear picture showing the fine details of the statue.
All the best

a very interesting portrait of this elaborate and mysterious ancient statue. Leros is one of the islands dedicated to Artemis, there was a temple at the north of the island and the area was full of her sacred meleagris birds. I like the way you framed this picture making the impact of the subtle smile and the expression more intriguing. Despite the scanning, textures and details have come through just fine. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great Sunday,

You're capturing well this statue by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's impressive to see the marble statue of Artemis in Greek mythology. Her look appears to be full of mercy gently. And, It's interesting in small animals around her.
