Photographer’s Note
Hierapolis was an ancient city built on top of the famous Pamukkale hot springs, located in what is now southwestern Turkey. It's been a healing centre since very early times. People came from all over to cure their ills, remained here and died, and the evidence of this is the very large necropolis located here.
We arrived in Hierapolis in the late afternoon. The ruins of this city, the white cliffs of Pamukkale, and the strange pool with pieces of ancient columns in it were all at our disposal to explore. In the distance we could even see the martyrium of St. Philip the apostle, which was actually kind of horrific to me - after all, a man died terribly in that place (he was crucified) for the entertainment of an audience.
But my focus in this picture is just these two figures walking into the beautiful distance where cloud and mountain fade into the blue of the sky. Or were there mountains at all? Maybe just a play of clouds that looked mountainish. I also like the look of this ancient road, the seemingly eternal conduit from my world into this one.
