Pillars are important elements of the architecture. They are the carriers of the roofs or domes.
But as in the architecture also in social life there are pillars. One of them is my dear friend JOHN MAENHOUT (jhm) who celebrates today a very special event !
And he is of course one of the major pillars of this site !
"Happy Birthday dear John, and all my best wishes for today and for the coming years" !
By the way this capture shows part of the North Agora (market place) of the antique city of Aphrodisias with their remaning pillars with ionic capitals.

A wonderful dedication to John! You described his photographic work in a really appropriate way. Yes, he IS a pillar of this site.
All the best to you both!

Beautiful shot, with the lovely blue of the sky reflected so richly in the water. Nicely composed at a pleasing angle, and you managed to control the highlights well despite the bright sunlight falling on them.
Good note, too. Thanks for the information about John's birthday - I will congratulate him now.

Colonnes à chapiteaux ionique formant une image de toute beauté.

It was through your gallery that I learned very happily about this place and I am fascinated by it. The pillars indicate a very grand building, and the fact that the area is now submerged adds to the sense of being abandoned but not in any way that makes the picture seem less welcoming and inviting. I am amazed at the quality of the stonework in the detail of the columns, after all these years I thought the weather would have destroyed them. Really a beautiful scene.
All the best

Lonely Planet guidebook gives Aphrodisias a very high rating. It would be up there with Pergamum & Ephesus if it wasn't so remote. Looks a little like the Selchuk area with the swampy terrain, but there is only 1 column there. Good sharpness and reflections with the diagonal axis adding dynamism. Tfs!

These pillars are beautiful, and a living piece of ancient history. Very old things like this fascinate me, since we don't have anything as old here in NY. I like the water underneath the pillars, it shows some reflections, and all of the greenery and the blue sky above are nice, too.
