Photographer’s Note

My third (and probably last) photo from The Shrine of Sayidda Zeinab was taken at night.

Sayidda Zeinab Mosque is a beautiful Iranian-style mosque and shrine in southern Damascus, Syria. It attracts Shia Muslim pilgrims from Iran and around the world who care far less about its blue-tiled architecture than about its sacred shrine of Sayidda Zeinab, daughter of the Shia martyr Ali and granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad.

Many tourists to Damascus miss the Sayyida Zeinab Shrine, but it is well worth a visit as it is a beautiful building and the best insight into the emotion of Shia Islam outside of Karbala and Najaf in Iraq. It is a simple taxi ride away and non-Muslim visitors are welcome, especially in the outer courtyard.

The Shrine of Sayidda Zeinab is believed to house the remains of Lady Zeinab, the daughter of Imam Ali (the fourth Caliph). She was taken captive by the army of Yazid after the massacre of her brothers Hussein and Hassan at Karbala and Najaf. For Shia Muslims, this moment, when the family of Ali was betrayed, is the defining and most tragic moment of their history. Thus the atmosphere at Sayyida Zeinab is not one of quiet veneration, but one of passionate mourning with wailing, singing, crying, and chest beating.

The mosque dates from the 1990s, but was built on a pre-existing shrine.

I am of the opinion Deniz, that the shot needs to crooped more from the left and a little bit from the right and at least two inches from the bottom.
This would give more focus on the blurred people which you have so rightly caught.
The shot then needs framing with thick black boarder.

Try....and feel the change.

I like very much this title which summarizes perfectly the composition of your photo with these arches and these reflections. People pass as shadows on this brilliant bottom, silhouettes persist in big shadows, it is very beautiful.

suriyeden hani o kadar cok sayida iyi fotografin yoktu? bunlar super deniz, biliyorsun. her birine hayran kaldim ben. bunu da gorunce yarin suriyeye gidemiyorum diye sacimi basimi yoldum. (once gezi yeterli sayida insan olmadigi icin iptal edilecekti. son anda yeterli sayi olusmus ama bu kez de cananin pasaportu sengen icin elcilkte kalmis. amma talihsizim yav.)

I would have liked it in black and white, but this is just a matter of personal preference.

Fantastic sacred atmosphere, excellent "studied" framing and perfectly balanced composion, fantastic reflection! Beautiful light managment, I like the warm colours, and the "ghost" effect of the passing people. Even the "barrelizing" effect of the lens, works perfectly well here! Congratulations!

Altınımsı ışıklar ve kapkaranlık kemerler altında "NG @ Night" kıvamında olmuş bu da...
Keşke sağdan biraz daha kesip simetrik yapsaymışsın dicem ama muhtemelen oradaki kadının yarısı kesilecek diye yapmamışsındır.
Yerdeki parlak yansımalar da çok güzel gözüküyor.

The symmetric placement of the volumes in the frame with the blurry silhouettes and the special light in combination with the shadows makes all the situation very emotive.

very nice idea... from my view I think it would be more powerful and better compositionally if you included more pure black along the top and burn in the shadows along the bottom, creating three horizontal zones of form & content...

just a suggestion... Richard
