Photographer’s Note

Another posting from the great Omayyad Mosque of Damascus. A picture taken very quickly before the women even realized that there was someone behind them and I did my best to get out before the prayer started. I don't consider it fair about taking pictures when people are concentrated in prayer, but the subject was irresitibly photogenic, if I may say so. Camera hand held.

Suriye,bu kadar yakınımızda ama gezmek için hiç aklıma gelmeyecek bir ülke.Halbuki,Anadolu gibi pekçok medeniyetten iz kalmış zengin kültürü özellikle Osmanlı esreleri ile görülmeye değer olduğunu şimdi anlıyorum.Caminin yapısında hatta içindeki türbenin inşasındada Roma sütunları olduğuna göre eski bir Roma tapınağının üzerine inşa edilmiş galiba(Tunustaki Kaiouran camii gibi).İç mekanda bu kadar net ve doğal renklerde çekim de ustalığınızdan elbette.Teşekkürler sizden öğrendiklerim için.İyi haftasonu dileklerimle.

Hello Izzet. Good to see another impression from this mosque, in which you again made fine use of the available light. The women in the foreground are beautifully included to form a storytelling scene, and also the splendid architecture and decorative elements of the interior are shown in a fine way. But better: the composition with the women in the foreground looks very nice. At least I like it very much.

Looks a nice work and you're right: is irresistibly because this is something unique and very personal.

Another wonderful frame from you, the near silhouette of the women rise in front of the ornate Islamic arch are as striking as the austerity of the arch itself.
[I wonder if a bit of space from the left should not be cropped, perhaps a tiny-weeny fraction from the right also, just up to the two little figure. This will help enhance the abstract quality of the image, as well as focus our attention to the two figures on the right as well as the little figures in the distance without distraction]

You are right to highlight the boundaries you set yourself around the ethics of taking a shot....it is always very informative to share this sort of information.....I was wondering before i read the note.....just catching that one woman with her head turned was very nicely timed - unusal compositionally - but with the uniqueness of the moment (from the representations most of us will be used to) it really holds the interest.

Hi Izzet - unusual 5-fold silhouettes nicely cut against the pretty architectural details; like Animesh I also had a feeling for a crop like he suggests, but after trying it it came too tight so the version you post seems to be the best approach, and it was good you skillfully composed it like that in the first place, regards, Daniel

Hallo Izzet, you captured beautifully the characteristic contast between the black chadors of the women and the light colours of the interior of the mosque.
I remember sitting in the great Omayyad Mosque and incredible atmosphere of the mosque during the prayers and the joyful atmosphere of the mosue courtyard... didn't have much courage to take pictures as the place seemed to be very ortodox... thank you for sharing and bringing with this picture the memories from Damascus.

Irresistable is the right word for this! The colour of the interior is incredible, and almost has a glow which makes the silhoette of the women really stand out very well. Excellent!

I agree about the irresistability of the scene, Izzet. The sillouetted foreground formed by the five women is just great, contrasted with the beautiful interior seen in the back. Also good that we can see the face of the second one. Very good shot!

Je ne crois pas qu'il y avait de meilleur facon de montrer ce lieu. Le contraste entre la lumiere et les ombres est saisissant.
