Hamah is a charming city, eternally associated with the waterwheels (Norias). These famouse water wheels are very ancient, penetrating back to the old ages, carrying waters from the Orontes River high to canals which lead it to the various quarters of the city and its orchards.
The Noria word was derivated from the sound of the waterwheel. The Norias are very ancient, reaching back to the Aramaic Age, and the most ancient historical source of the Norias is a mosaic artistic image which was found in the ancient city of Afamia.
Its diameter ranges between 5 and 21 meters, and the number of boxes around its perimeter ranges between 50 and 120 boxes.
There used to exist about 220 norias, of which remained only 20 ones.

An intriguing photo with these big wheels and an old aquaduc doubled by its reflection. Good work and very interesting as well.

When I seen this photo it reminded me of a similar place here in Ireland, But not as grand as yours, and that I must photo. I really like your composition, particularly the reflection and contrast says it all.
I also like the historical info.
Very well done.

Wonderful shot. Great sharpness and colour the darker water reflection adds to the mystique of this shot.
Thank you for sharing.

bello scatto notturno! L'antica architettura è molto suggestiva. Mi piace molto anche il riflesso nell'acqua e la bella gestione dela luce.
