Photographer’s Note

The Umayyad mosque or also called Al-Jami Al-Kabir was built 715. The history of the place is fascinating, it has even functioned as a Roman temple and a Byzantine church. Over the years, the mosque suffered several destructions caused by earthquakes, fires and invasions. The most recent one came at the hands of the Mongols when they invaded Syria in the 13th century. Only the stunning 11th century square Minaret survived the invasion to this day, while the rest of the edifice dates from the reconstruction following the Mongol invasion.
