[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Inspired by one flickr member, I thought I try his technique and include human figure into my landscape shot. As there was no one else at 5.30AM and no local woman would pose for me anyway, I had to pose myself. I set autotimer and had to quickly get over the slippery rocks to steady position. As this is 15 second exposure and there was a light breeze, my abaya didn’t keep steady for all time.

The abaya (Arabic عباءة, plural abayat عباءات) is an overgarment worn by women in parts of the Islamic world. It is the traditional form of hijab, or Islamic dress, for many countries of the Arabian peninsula. It is compulsory for all woman in Saudi Arabia, even for visitors like myself as Saudi Arabia requires women to cover in public. Covering is enforced by the religious police, the mutaween (also known as the 'mutawa') and you dont want to get in trouble with them, as they have more power than normal police. Traditional abayat are black, it covers the whole body except the face, feet, and hands. It can be worn with the niqab, a face veil covering all but the eyes. Some women choose to wear long black gloves, so their hands are covered as well.

I wonder what you gonna say about this shot.

Hello Lucie, this shot has an incredible atmosphere.
A sort of still life picture, with lights expecially created in studio. It shows your very good technique and skillness.
Regards Stefano

Dag Lucie,
You know i have deep respect for your work and how you apparoche your objects with great care and lots of creativity, this one is no exception to that rule. The way you composed this with youtself int he frame is a very clever thought end the whole picture is breating a fantastic mood. Wonderful light, great composition, you really have an eye for that.
Only thing are the fallen lines of the Mosque, he is leaning a bit to much. I made a small correction on that, hope you can live with that ;-)
Groetjes, Henk

Hello Lucie! Amazing composition. Nice lightness, very nice colors. Wonderful palace in the background. Very good POV and capture. Well done!

Hi Lucie,
very nice image, ht elight, the tones and the colors are simply great.
So now, we can see you also for real on the picture :)
best regards, didier

hi Lucie

I had seen your other shot of this place in closer range. And I was about to ask a question about how you got around the places, but this post answered that nicely. And perhaps not just overgarment, it has to be black or dull color, right? I am also quite sure that extremely rare to find a woman going outdoor to photography landscape in a place like this. Only the avid passionate photographer will do so.

I suppose f/27 is to get the DOF of rocks at FG without losing details of the mosque, and 15s would give very strong color contrast and richness of the moss on the rocks, plus the smooth effect of water. All done in a superb manner. I tend to agree on the optical distort of the mosque due to wide angle, and Henk corrected that nicely.

One thing I find really due to skill, the focus set correctly by the rock on which you would stand. Although I tend to worry if you would slip off the slippery rock while trying to reach the spot under 15s timer. i would also believe that your body movement attributes to the blur, it is not possible to keep perfect still on a rock like this. The blur is not important as you are not facing the lens.

tfs, bill

Hello Lucie,
Such a magical mood and a great model ;-)
The morning light and the soft colors added to the long exposure really give a wonderful atmosphere. Perfect composition and good model performance not to move for 15 seconds...
Have a nice day.

hi Lucie

superb one, i don't see critic to write on your work, i just admire it.
cheers
greg

i love everything ! colors, style, crop...

bravo !

To speak frankly, I like more the note than the picture itself even if technically, it's very well realised and composed and that you found a good balance between cold and warm shades of colors. I think that, as a woman, your point of view on life in Saudi Arabia is priceless and that, interests me much more.
Regards,
Marine

I know that abaya is required but I don't understand if the niqab is an obligation too?

Hi Lucie,
good trick, so I will always wear a red shirt when I go out to take photos :)
good one,
Chris

Lucie,
These Kuwaiti/Saudi seascapes of yours are totally mind-blowing - dazzling - luminous. I particularly like the way the sky and sea almost merge into a surreal infinity of space.

Well, you tell me its an abaya, but I still think you're doing a pretty good impression of Napoleon here! ;)

Best regards
Colin

Superb capture Lucie, fantastic colours and mood. Great to see you in the picture, must try somthing like that myself. I may give the flickr site a go soon.

Best Regards Steve.

Une photo issue d'un compte de fées ... une ambance magique avec des couleurs splendides et, bien entendu, techniquement parfaite exposition. De t'inclure toi-même était une excellente idée et donne la touche de maître ... Bravo!
