The West Bank has a large number of historic monasteries. Three are very close to one another; the huge Mar Saba monastery, The Monastery of Saint George and this one, the Monastery of the Temptation of Christ.
Situated in the side of a cliff, hovering above Jericho, this is a working monastery. Jericho is the oldest and lowest city on the planet (maybe universe). To get up to the Monastery there is a cable car rope way, which is in the Guinness Book of Records as the highest / longest ropeway under sea level or something daft like that. This Monastery was founded on the spot where Christ was tempted by the Devil, after his time in the wilderness. When I visited, the interior was closed to visitors :( You could walk to St. George’s Monastery from here if you have a good map.
This photo was taken in very bright mid day light. Even with a polarizer and UV filter the picture was too harsh. Jericho and the Dead Sea area is always warm, yet just 2 hours back in Amman roads were closed due to snow.
