Bethlehem is a Biblical town which is only a 2 hour walk south from Jerusalem. Famous for being the site of Jesus’ birth, you can still visit Herod’s palace and imagine him ordering all babies to be killed.
Bethlehem is an Arab town, built on the top of a hill. You can get good views by walking to the old Shepherd’s fields that face down on the city, which is where this picture was taken from. I really liked Bethlehem, and you should go there too! The West Bank is a very safe place for foreigners, yet there are few tourists and the Palestinian tourist economy is stagnating as a result. My taxi driver spoke 3 languages and had a degree in hotel management, but the hotel he worked at closed due to lack of customers. Don’t let the media image fool you, it’s a great and very safe place to go.
