Because of the traditional Islamic restriction on depicting the human or animal form, the written word is frequently used as an important architectural element. Verses from the Qur'an are used prominently above archways, such as this one at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Oman, or above doors, along the tops of walls, etc. The script is very beautiful, although highly stylized and difficult for a novice like myself to read. I think there is no written language as pleasing to the eye as Arabic.
