[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is one of four columns forming the entrance of a Roman temple in the valley of Besre. Only half of the columns appear as the other half as well as the rest of the temple are buried under the earth. The temple was probably that of the god Aesculapius. Next to the columns flows al-Awwali River which ends in the sea near Sidon near another temple, that of Aesculapius (Eshmun in Phoenician). The river was known in Roman times as the Bostrenus River after Besre which was a village situated near the temple. Years of silt deposit in the valley of Besre have led to the rise of gound level, covering the temple and the ancient village of Besre under it.
