The Location

The mountain in the central distance is called the Seven Pillars of Wisdom and is probably the most noted feature in this wonderful landscape called Wadi Rum in Southern Jordan. T.E. Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia) described this region as "vast and echoing" and called it his home. He gave this rock formation its name.

The Image

This is part of my point & shoot series from my recent trip to Egypt and Jordan. The golden hours in this location really live up to the name and the rock formations are fabulous. I found the play of side-lighting seductive to say the least. This location is one of the quietest places I have ever personally been - along with one of the dustiest :)

Note: I also used a 2 stop Hitech grad filter. I left the 5D home for this trip and went with a Powershot G9 and a 20 dollar travel tripod. I missed having my wide angle but I was able to get a shot or two that would have been impossible with my larger kit. I had some problems with the G9 though and I was disappointed to learn that the only Canon software that supports the G9 RAW files (as of this date) is ZoomBrowser EX. I prefer DPP but had to go with upgrading to ACR 4.3.1 in CS3 to convert them.

Cheers!

Bob G.

It's nice to remember that beautiful desert through your picture. I hope to come back there a try the three day camel walk between Petra and the Wadi Rum.

You captured a great light. Why did you not get your 5D with you ?

Well done, Bob.
I really like this golden landscape. A beautifully structured rock and a great composition.

Gorgeous landscape, perfectly caught.
Well done Bob, no need of claims here

Hello Bob -

Very nice in deed! The late afternoon warm light is very seductive. Your little P&S sure does a fine job with the details. I love this light, but to me I feel this is just a tad to much should be cooled just a bit. That is just a personal preference though. Well done!

Did you make to Petra? What about Cairo? My wife would be really interested.

Thank you for sharing.

John

HI Bob
Absolutely fabulous landscape, beautifully lit. The warm colours are really appealing and the composition interesting with the foreground rock.

Hi BOB1
Wonderful red and orange tones and a good composition with this interesting geological formation in the foreground.Fantastic light and great depth. It`s nice to see the mountans dissapear in the distance in the mist.
Regards,Leo

Hello Bob,

How are you? This is a change from your images that boast water and reflection, here there is not a drop. This distinction is good, providing a unique image within your gallery. The subtle changes in light and hue between the FG and BG are delightful. I know exactly what you mean about the quietness; without car engines, the sound of wind rushing through trees or indeed birds singing you are left with an eerie, hollow void soundscape. I have experienced this in locations in Australia's outback. A well presented and noted image, well done.

Hello Bob,

Bravo.

A+

Hi Bob,
Good to see you back. This is a very impressive start to your P&S series and I look forward to seeing more. I like the textures and movement of the foreground rocks, leading you towards the mountains in the background. The most striking thing though is the all-pervasive red/yellow colour of the landscape. Even the sky seems filled with red dust!
Fine results in spite of leaving your 5D at home.
Cheers
John

Well this is a famous name, from the days of Lawrence. Having read "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" it is quite interesting for me to see this landscape. It's as beautiful and dramatic as I imagined it. Great lighting and I like the sense of depth you were able to create with this. Well done!

Fantastic landscape Bob, inspiring really, with those huge majestic formation across the valley, and just enough sandy haze in the air to give the shot a very natural feeling of depth.
Excellent. Hope you've got some more!

colin

Hi Bob,
What a fantastic and colourful image, Having visited the place previously you have done a fantastic job showing the beauty of the region. Thanks for sharing,
Jules

Hi Bob,
This is fantastic work especially since your were not using a DSLR (the G9 us arguably the finest of all the digicams...I don't blame you for traveling light in this harsh and remote area). Even with our digicams, our tripods are still indispensible. I use a nice little carbon fiber tripod when I travel with my Nikon Coolpix P-5000. You posted another outstanding and very underrated landscape! You are a master landscape photographer no matter what equipment that you use. Your technique is flawless!
Stan
