Photographer’s Note
Karak is a Castle town located high on a plane near the Dead Sea. Originally built by Crusaders, it was later besieged unsuccessfully by Saladin. The present ruins are from the updated Mamluke period. Of particular interest is the large tower, which faces a nearby hill, the Castle’s only weak area. To counter the threat from this obvious siege engine platform the tower walls are 6.5 metres thick!
The main town of Karak is also very quaint, and I can definitely recommend a visit to this lesser travelled town that is only 2 hours north of Petra.
This image is a photo-merge of 2 pictures. They did not fit together very well, so I had to lighten all shadows quite a bit, unfortunately this led to a flattened looking image. The weather was sunny, but I used a low F – Stop that darkened the clouds too much. I used a filter in Photoshop to try to make the sky more blue.
