The Location

This is a continuation of my point & shoot series from Jordan. This is again Wadi Rum near Aqaba in the South. The plant (dead I think) in the foreground is a Phoenicean Juniper common throughout the Levant. Camels love eating the conifer leaves. If you didn't know where you were you might very well think that you were somewhere in the Southwestern United States based on the features of this landscape.

The Image

While waiting for the light for my first composition at this specific location I followed my normal MO looking for other images and viewpoints. I climbed and crawled all over this rock structure and found this small Juniper bush at the base of these rocks that I knew would make a good near/far subject. Based on where the sun was going to come up I knew that the foreground in this view would get light a few minutes later than the first. I wanted the light to be touching the bush but to not completely illuminate the foreground so I snapped off a few images of the first view and then moved immediately to this location to make this image.

I always carry a small plastic 'viewfinder' with me that I use to recon possibilities while in the field. I cut several rectangular pieces from a cheap paint tray and cut a 3"x2" square hole in them. I normally don't even take my camera out until I think I have found what I think is a good subject. Once I have the camera on the tripod I use a viewfinder and continue looking all around for other options - limited only by how safe I feel stepping more than a few feet from my camera (people & wind being the biggest concerns).

Also used a 2-stop grad on this.

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hello Bob!
I like this photo really much! The atmosphere of this photo is kind of strange (which I like a lot) because of the shadows and the soft morning light. The depth of field is also great.
Well done!

Best wishes,
Eino

Hello Bob,

Ce pauvre végétale semble vouloir survivre malgré la dureté du clima. Cet arbre est-il même encore en vie ? Joli contraste entre la chaleur et le desert et cette petite parcelle de vie.
La profondeur de champ est parfaitement gérée.
Bien vu !

G'day Bob!
Now this is impressive for a non-DSLR camera - love the composition and colours. Interesting notes on your techniques, too. Top shot!

Jeff

Hi Bob,
I was going through your gallery and I am really impressed. You have one of the greatest landscape shots in TE, no kidding. I chose the latest to critique first. Quite wonderful POV here, the colors are fantastic. Like it a lot.
Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Shaeri

Hi Bod, you are certainly getting about these days. Love the warm tones and interesting foreground details, composition sits well. I see your using a P&S on this outing.. Just back from cpyrus this week, damaged the dslr on third day leaving me with nothing more than the shirt pocket Ricoh R6 for the remaining 9 days. With a sensor the size of pea you can guess I was struggling. Well done.

Hello Bob -

I can say much about the FG element as there is not much to it but the rest of the image is spot on the money. The late afternoon light on the sandstone is just stunning. You are right, this could be Utah or Arizona. Very nice in deed! Excellent composition and presentation. Well done!

Thank you for sharing.

John
