Photographer’s Note
After start Rolling into 2009, here it goes my second image from the desert scenery of Wadi Rum. This is not far from the Visitor's Center of the protected area of the Park. I was driving outside of the Park to explore the surroundings away from the tourists. The shot was taken about an hour before the other picture. Two hours before sunset the wind storm wasn't yet visible, at least in this part of the way. It seems that besides windstorms, camels can also be a danger for drivers ;-)
UPDATE
As corrected by Rob (alvaraalto), the animal is actually a dromedary (Camelus dromedarius - one hump) and not a camel (Camelus bactrianus - two humps).
I struggle with that name everytime I travel. I never saw any camel in India, Jordan, Egypy, Turkey... they're dromedarius everywhere but everyone call them camels. By now, I don't even believe camels exist...
-----------------
WADI RUM (From Rough Guide to Jordan book):
One of the most spectacular natural environments in the Middle East, the desert scenery of WADI RUM (pronounced to rhyme with "dumb", not "doom") is a major highlight of a visit to Jordan. The wadi itself is one of a sequence of parallel faults forming valleys in the sandy desert south of the Shara mountains. They are oriented almost perfectly north– south, shaped and characterized by giant granite, basalt and sandstone mountains rising up to 800m sheer from the desert floor. The rocky landscape has been weathered over the millennia into bulbous domes and weird ridges and textures that look like nothing so much as molten candle-wax, but it's the sheer bulk of these mountains that awes – some with vertical, smooth flanks, others scarred and distorted, seemingly dripping and melting under the burning sun. The intervening level corridors of soft red sand only add to the image of the mountains as monumental islands in a dry sea. Split through by networks of canyons and ravines, spanned by naturally formed rock bridges and watered by hidden springs, the mountains offer opportunities galore for scrambling and rock-climbing, where you could walk for hours or days without seeing another soul.
The sunsets are extraordinary; evening coolness after the heat of the day is blissful; the clarity of the desert air helps produce a starry sky of stunning beauty; and the tranquillity of the pitch-dark desert night is simply magical. It's an unforgettable experience.

Ola Ricardo,
I'm eager to see the other message... for the camel: "beware of dangerous trekker" ;-)
Good perspective and the camel tells it's not western USA, deliveers warm feeling.

Hi Ricardo,
Funny picture, but thanks to that sign an extra point of interest. Are there still wild camels around? The only camels in the wild i ever saw were in Australia. But the Wadi Rum is an interesting place which i would like to visit one day, i have seen great shots from that place and seeing this one from your hand with those rock formations great compositions are possible....
Have a nice weekend,

Bom dia Ricardo,

And ahead yet another danger! It is a fairly minimal composition with interest not only provided by the sign, which seems funny to us, but also the rock formations with lots of form and texture. Just as you intended the road leads us into the image well. Original shot!

Hello Ricardo,
The colours and the forms of the landscape are wonderful in South Jordan. Very beautiful on this picture is the camel sign and a detail: the shadow of the sign with a curve in it. I think it's a detail but it's good for the composition.
It's a very long time ago I've visited Wadi Rum. Then there wasn't a road like this one.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Ric,
Fascinating landscape, jazzed up with this warning size.
I have to correct your info, for the animal on the traffic sign is a dromary (Camelus dromedarius)(one hump) and not a camel (Camelus bactrianus)(two humps): -). But I think in Jordan they mix all one hump and two hump camels.

Bela captura!

Hi Ricardo,
For us, in the neighbourhoods of Versailles, they are the crossings of wild boars and in Jordan they are the camels !!! The sun was to be quite hot to note the beautiful light which reigns on this photograph. Beautiful catch of sight of this desert place, the natural colors are pleasant. The absence of trees makes it possible to see the camel arriving !!! Original photograph, thank you Ricardo.
With all my friendships and a very good WE,

Bonjour Ricardo.
Beau travail !

Ricardo,
a nice and funny post of the famous Wadi Rum. Did you also see some wild dromedars trumpeting through the desert? I hope you didn't get hit by anyone. At least the sign gave you a clear indication of the eminent danger behind that turn. Quite interesting to read through your note and especially the last portion: "The sunsets are extraordinary; evening coolness after the heat of the day is blissful; the clarity of the desert air helps produce a starry sky of stunning beauty; and the tranquillity of the pitch-dark desert night is simply magical. It's an unforgettable experience." Know that is something that I can realy on. I have the same experiences here at the Southwestern deserts in America. Did you also get some shots of this magic? Any chance to see it here at TE?

Bom domingo!

hi Ricardo
Very interesting sign because it is a symbol that can never be placed in any place of Malaysia [except maybe a zoo?]
Good composition to place the sign post at 1/3 point and casting a shadow on the sand. I guess it does not rain in Jordan like Malaysia, so the road construction is also without any ditches.
What I think your title should read - Camel, beware of dangerous humans with cars! :)
Greetings from Borneo.

Ciao Ricardo,
you're right: Wadi Rum is a magic place!
In Jordan there are a lot of roadsigns like this one and I always think they're really funny and a little surreal!
Great POV here, and good depth of field with the black road guiding our eyes to the red mountains and the deep blue sky of this Jordan desert!

this is the first time i hear the word dromedary, lol... what i knew was that there were two types of camels; camels with one hump (camelus d.) and camels with two humps (camelus b.)...
now that i know that there are in fact no camels, but dromedaries and bactrians, megalol! >:D...

Interesting compo. with the signage prominent on the side of the road curving away. The rock formations are very unique I understand. I also do not agree with Rob about dromedaries not being camels. One humped varieties (dromedaries) are as much of a camel as are the two humped Bactrian varieties. In fact contrary to what you wrote (;-) about camel's not existing, the word camel not only includes these two varities but also the South American animals like Llama, Alpaca, Guanaco & Vicuna as well.
Sorry for this ballaber & broing you my friend ;-)

Merhaba Ric,
I learnt so many things about camels(What I understand again is that I'm a poor woman-lack of knowledge about everything). And I really wonder what the next sign is ... The curve of the road gives the composition strength and the rocks in BG is the most charming part.
Congrats and have a nice day,

Hello Ricardo,
Well, we have them here too... not camels, but moose!
To hit a 500 kg moose at 80 kph is not only dangerous it is deadly and once I was this close...
I like the curving road an d the colours of the desert, the sign contrasts well as an eye-catcher!
