Photographer’s Note

The ancient Roman city of Jerash (Gerasa) is one of the best preserved of the whole Roman Empire. The Emperor Hadrian visited Gerasa in 129-130 CE. The triumphal arch (or Arch of Hadrian) was built to celebrate his visit. A remarkable Latin inscription records a religious dedication set up by members of the imperial mounted bodyguard "wintering" there.
It was built outside the city a few hundred metres
from the southern gate. Now this is the first of the buildings you see when entering the excavation site.
