The Dead Sea. The lowest place on earth. 396 meters below sea level. also the saltiest lake on earth. The name of the lake - Dead Sea is true - there are no life there - no fish, no plants.
Ah, except from this plant, which is probably the lowest plant on earth, and an unbelievable victory of life against the deadly environment.
You can see the salt around.
Against all odds - my third entry to the scav hunt.
BTW the reflected mountains are across the border - in Jordan.

A great graphic photo Itzik! With the light, colors and salt on the plant the place looks like it's extraterrestrial grounds... Very good capture!
Nottinghill (1089) 2004-08-25 13:32
intriguing and very well composed picture (in this case the golden rule rules ) including colors composition. simple, but appealing.
thanks for sharing
jhm (157976) 2004-08-25 13:36
I see a water painting, aquarel, with very soft colours, Yitzhak, you note is fantastic, indeed I see the salt around. Well seen!
Aegean (2571) 2004-08-25 13:40
I love the soft focusing and the pastel colors in this photo...And ofcourse the comopositon is really great...very well done Yitzhak!
jocke71 (566) 2004-08-25 13:46
A wonderful shot in that you have captured this brave plant, its reflection and the salt, and yet you can't really see either the sea or sky. Remarkable.
Sorcerer (55) 2004-08-25 13:57
A super ambiency!! Very goog composition !!
Hanssie (10886) 2004-08-25 14:03
I can't find words for this one.....it's almost "holy"....
Super (Okay, that's the word...)
davecall (575) 2004-08-25 14:21
This proves that perfection is perfectly silent, perfectly still. An exquisite piece of photography, with an enlightening Note to accompany it. Sterling work Yitzhak.
burdallet (0) 2004-08-25 14:22
voila une image qui ne manque pas de sel :-)
lemon_logix (1054) 2004-08-25 14:29
this image needs to be printed large to be appreciated. I suggest you put it on your wall.
nwoehnl (122) 2004-08-25 14:37
It looks like a painting! Beautifully composed, wonderful pastel colors, and I like the subtle mountain reflection in the upper area. An ingenious entry into this category of the scav hunt. The frame you added was also very well chosen. Great catch, Yitzhak, easily among your best work.
Midnight_sun (1941) 2004-08-25 14:43
Love the simplicity and calmness of this shot. The uniform blue with just a hint of pink in the top right increases the isolation of this plant, and the tranquillity of the shot. reminds me of a shot by dsidwell called congregation (or something like that). Great shot, well done.
Jeppe (18654) 2004-08-25 15:27
Great and simple shot Yitzhak - and I would say not only the lowest plants but also the "hardest" ;-) - must hard to live here and in that salty water - thanks for sharing this fine work - I like it very much.
Rockyboy (20598) 2004-08-25 15:39
Wow, this one is impressive, Yitzhak! Lovely colors and very good framing of the lowest plant of the earth... Bravo!
RAP (1053) 2004-08-25 16:04
Lástima que no participas de TN Yitzhak... esta foto sería perfecta para allí.
Bella composicion, gran encuadre.
Colorido y atmósfera maravillosos.
Pity which you do not participate in TN Yitzhak... this photo would be perfect for there.
Beautiful composition, great frame.
Wonderful colorful and atmosphere.
elroyie (2750) 2004-08-25 16:05
Very good picture and I can't say anything else because I have almost the same frame (a little bit closer) of this plant :-) that I intend to post to TE.
Very good colours.
Piotr_Angiel (2564) 2004-08-25 16:22
I like so common stories about famous and well known places...
Greetings - Piotr
cmartos (242) 2004-08-25 16:59
Astonishing plant, wonderfuly cought. What a nice composition, this plant stands out proud, against all odds. The pastel tones suit very well the scene, the slightly contrasted plant is opposed to the soft negative space of the frame, a wonderful picture Yitzhak!
Gix (3565) 2004-08-25 17:07
Fantastic, really a incredible shot. The colors, the composition, the subject, all!!
Really thanks for sharing!
robiuk (10807) 2004-08-25 17:47
Is this a painting or a photo, Yitzhak?
Can't believe what I see - the sea surface is excellently stained with different blues and touches of some other colours which I find hard to define.
And that salt crystals on the plant!
Truly amazing work!
cgrindahl (6113) 2004-08-25 17:55
This has David Sidwell written all over it Yitzhak... ;-)
That is a compliment, of course. This is a fine, distinctive capture made more curious by the fact it is impossible to read the scale. Are we looking a a circle of trees or of weeds rising from and reflected in the water? Wonderful composition with both delicate details and soft colors. Very fine work, to my eye.
spence (65) 2004-08-25 18:11
Beautiful, Yitzhak. It's all been said above. It occurs to me that the wonderful softness of the image contrasts impressively with the hardy toughness of the plant.
orme (7219) 2004-08-26 2:04
A simply beautiful composition, Yitzhak. I particularly like the touches of white on the plant at the water level. Wonderful colours. Perfect reflection.
Guenther (10915) 2004-08-26 2:14
WOW, wonderfull! a perfect compositon and the note is very interesting.

bazal (7900) 2004-08-26 4:22
Very nice comments for this great shot. Nice monochromic composition and interesting reflection on the over-salted water. Great work !
Georges (11185) 2004-08-26 5:53
EXTRA cette image est vraiment une totale reussite de part sa simplicité et son cadrage.
Bravo Yitzhak c'est exellent.
femkevdh (2633) 2004-08-26 6:47
WOW!!!!! A favorite! How serene! really, really beautiful Yitzhak! Colors, composition, the soft light, the sky and water that seem to melt...
Oldtree (2457) 2004-08-26 9:05
I like the composition and the info's given in your note. Infact the sea is over 400 meters below sea level in the mean time because humans are constantly taking water from this sea for drinking and agrecalture.
hojper (2832) 2004-08-26 10:14
A terrific title, a terrific note - and a magnificent shot. That incredible haze of blue and violet really holds so many colours. I guess it is all water and that the reflection you refer to is the violet part. The entire thing makes me think of Claude Monet's water lilies - and that's a compliment.
ishai (4097) 2004-08-26 13:12
Good composition, good colors, good details and a very good reflection
ChrisJ (117199) 2004-08-27 3:12
Looks like a Salvadore Dali painting, with the plant seemingly reflected in mid air.
Rhiannon (1728) 2004-08-27 5:10
Wow! Excellent shot! I love the simplicity in this one. The soft, smooth, bright surroundings make it look like the plant is living up among the clouds almost.
Reflections, details and colours are amazing.
joseelias (0) 2004-08-27 8:06
And an excelent entry! Unbeatable I guess. In fact quite impressive how a plant survives in such a salty environment. Good negative space technique although just a bit more space to the right and top could work well. very nice "surreal" colors.
Rinie_Hoff (9340) 2004-08-27 10:00
Hey Yitzhak, whata beautiful emptu shot this is, only a fwe colours, but so nice! The atmosphere is, I can hardly express it, not even in Dutch, a bit magical, I'd say at least. Compostion is beautiful. One could almost say it is frozen, and there's frost on the branches. really beautiful
gaetantgp (1310) 2004-08-28 7:32
A unique shot that's going in my favorite, Thanks for sharing Yitzhak!...Gaétan
richtersl (3546) 2004-08-28 19:48
Yitzhak, this is one of your best! The photo is perfect for this category. The reflection and the lack of horizon lend an eerie atmosphere to this composition. It looks like abstract are until one reads your note. Bravo!
naxius (16685) 2004-08-29 12:22
I've been there in may 2004, and I had a bath in the dead see. I can say that this is a great feeling to be in such water and I confirm that there is nothing alive there!
This plant is well composed inside your frame: in the left part and in the 1st tier on the picture.
The tones of blue are very nice too.
cloverstar (0) 2004-08-29 22:59
Very good composition, Yitzhak. Very simple in design and very effective. I enjoy all that negative space. The pink hues just add enough subtle colour to make it a beautiful image. Good job.
pridel (233) 2004-08-30 7:59
Absolutely abstract and I like much, without the note impossible to recognize what it is. I like this milky blue and calms it which emerges.
ps) it's very curious, today I saw the roof of the world and the place lowest of the earth :o)
Didi (60590) 2004-08-30 13:44
Très belle et curieuse composition, je suppose qu'il s'agit du brouillard, mais cela donne un très bel effet.
Very beautiful and curious composition, I suppose that it acts of the fog, but that gives a very beautiful effect.
dominique (11414) 2004-09-01 15:13
Very beautiful photograph, framing is well made and the splendid composition, beautiful work.

Informative picture! Nice border also!
smael (2878) 2004-09-10 16:17
I just have to repeat myself with my "critique" of the linked picture "snake". I think I like this the most. Great place and beautifully captured. Strange that such a harshe place can be so beautiful?
I think it's just one more reminder that things are not always what they seem, and that when things grow ugly something else will climb out of that mess...
elihesamian (26149) 2004-09-10 22:53
For creat a great artistic shot,...no need to words here,...amazing!!!
I'm very glad to see it.
dsidwell (9783) 2004-09-14 18:37
Hi Yitzhak. This is indeed a strange place. THe simple composition helps this have much power and effectiveness. My parents went 'swimming' in the Dead Sea and said it felt like swimming in lotion. Weird stuff! Nice image!
dovi (1068) 2004-09-27 7:11
One of your best: The plant seems to be floating, it's details and the background colors are very special.Well done!
kmolz (997) 2004-09-28 17:14
peacefully amazing, deadly great!

wouldn't ocean dwelling plants be at lower elevations. just kidding! incredible shot.
philip_coggan (11) 2005-01-10 19:04
Wow, this must be the most-critiqued photo on TE! :). But it derserves everything - it's a litle gem. And more than that, it's touching in an odd way - life at the extreme point.
IanSewell (579) 2005-01-13 17:19
Incredible that life can survive here. TFS. I can't wait to see this place. I came so close this year, but I couldn't escape from Egypt for long enough!
jafsc (96) 2005-01-16 14:36
That is better certainly Yitzhak! than this one I continue on your site, you have gorgeous works :)
So...a fall is a fall ;)
Congratulations for this 'master piece'

Nice picture. It looks like a japanese oil on canvas.
jafadabret (56501) 2006-01-22 8:48

chc (1468) 2006-06-06 7:10
A great graphic photo that looks like a painting? I like the fact that we can hardly distinguish the sea from the sky (a simple reflection ?). Well done,
pboehringer (770) 2006-06-13 17:30
It seems that everyone else already commented on this picture. So, what can I say? Is there anythig left to be said? Anything original? Hmmm, what about saying that it's a great simple composition shot with very nice colors. The note is nice too! I gues no one told you that before :-)
Mojgan (44) 2006-07-07 9:19
The contrast of this plant with its surroundings and also contrast of growth& life with death(the Dead sea) is fascinating.
Well done! that you found this point and took a picture.
KevRyan (22956) 2006-07-10 17:31
This is really quite amazing Yitzhak - incredible it's alive - the lowest land plant on Earth of course!
Beautifully shot minimalist image - I hope I can visit here soon.
best wishes Kev

Hi Yitzhak, this is indeed a great composition and capturing life in this harsh environment is awesome. all elements work together to give that one-of-a-kind composition.

DragonAngel (280) 2006-10-17 9:40
There must be somthing up interesting about this plant. And i heard that although this place is the saltiest place on earth, it doesnt eat metal but preserved it well. Is it true?
Thi sis indeed a nice photo and informative too. I just hope the plant was composed a bit closer :D

It's a beautiful composition and great frame.
Colorful and atmosphere are wonderful.
batalay (39959) 2007-01-27 9:55
What a compelling photo. The great physicist Werner Heisenberg once made the pronouncement, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it give a person to hear/see what he already knows." Well, that was my first impression of this photo. I've seen the Dead Sea a number of times (my closest friend, from the 70s at Oxford, is a professor of physics at the Technion). In six trips to visit him, we have frequently done touristing after an intense period of work. Accordingly, I derived great pleasure in seeing your photo.
What I also like is your photography is the integration of your photographic/painterly eye and your technical skills. (I am a theoretical physicist and an artist, thus the source of interest). I try to see art through the eyes of a scientist, and science through the eyes of the artist. Leonardo was simply the greatest in doing just that.
