Dome of the Rock

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
One of the most beautiful Islamic buildings from my recent travels to the Middle East, was without a doubt the Dome of the Rock.
The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine and a major landmark located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It was completed in 691 making it the oldest existing Islamic building in the world.
It is said that the beautiful golden dome was created by surplus funds consisting of 100,000 gold dinar coins, which were melted down and cast on the dome's exterior. It was written that at the time of construction the dome had such a strong glitter that no eye could look straight at it.
Until 2006 entrance by non-Muslims to the dome courtyard was prohibited - however thankfully now this beautiful structure is open to the public to admire. |
