Although the land area of Israel is a mere 7,992 square miles (which is 5.0% of the land area of California), like many wine growing nations or regions that have a long north-south axis (Italy, Chile or California, for example), the country has a large variety of microclimates.
The vineyard in the picture is located about 20km west of Jerusalem, on a hilly terrain. Vineyards are often on hillsides. Planting on hillsides, especially those facing south, is most often in an attempt to maximize the amount of sunlight that falls on the vineyard. For this reason some of the best wines come from vineyards planted on quite steep hills, conditions which would make most other agricultural products uneconomic.
Not far from there is Zorah, the birthplace of the biblical Samson, from the tribe of Dan. |
