Over the Backgammon Photo

Photographer’s Note

Backgammon is a very popular game in the Middle East.

In places like Cairo or Istanbul it is usually an all-male activity; men socialize in coffee houses to play the game and also probably smoke, drink and discuss the daily events.

In Israel and Palestinian territories it is very popular too, but it is generally played by young people, friends or in a family context. The game is called "shesh-besh".

Backgammon is the oldest game in recorded history and originated in Mesopotamia. Although adopted by the Romans and known during the Middle Ages, the game gained popularity in the 17th century, then the word "back-gammon" was coined in England, and became an aristocratic pastime there.

high pov works well here dear daniel.. and playing backgammon is great while sunbathing or in shadow on a sunny day.. i like their natural view..

This game is called "nardy" in Russia, it went from central asia. An intereting note!

Hello Daniel
I used to play backgammon and I do remember when we were calling "shesh-besh", (we had Greek friends) it meant 6&5...
The holiday's feel here is well conveyed, the high pov works well on the couple who seem to be concentrated on their game! I see they play with a wooden board...I can almost hear the sound of the rolling dices ;)

Well taken because the 2 persons have a different behaviour and make a frame to the backgammon board.
Low sun = hot colours

I do not know which to choose among your superb photographs. Rather than the side sight of a priest, I prefer the sight of top of a pretty woman. Beautiful superbly enlightened image and suitable tight framing. Congratulations.
