"Oh, a wondrous bird is the pelican!
His bill holds more than his belican.
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week.
But I'm darned if I know how the helican."
Dixon Lanier Merritt (1910)
Mr. Merrit was right, the pelican's beak can "really hold more than its belly can": the pouch holds about three gallons, the stomach about one gallon.
The bill of a pelican is the longest of any bird. The bill's main function, and probably what drove its evolution, is as a fish-catcher, but it has a multitude of other uses, from excreting excess salts to advertising sexual readiness. |

Hi Daniel,
A good close-up photo of the pelicans, a lot of details can be seen. The photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. Thanks for sharing.
Pierre
Hi Daniel,
I like this capture with the couple of pelicans, that it has a high quality of image that shows us with great definition all the details of his feathers and of the colors of his beautiful beaks. It seems that they are posing for the photography.
The water with the reflex of the sky and the duck they add more beauty to this composition, which I do not understand why it has not been more valued. It is a good and very attractive work.
Best regards,
Josep

Hi Daniel
Very unusual post from you...the picture is very good technically, with a good framing & tight crop. Contrast is good with the dark waters..very sharp & clear & a good one to post
