Photographer’s Note

This is Israel's fifth largest city, Ashdod (pop. 204,000).

On the deep left, the port, built in the mid 1960s and now the country's largest, accounting for 60% of international trade.

On the right, the Moroccan culture center. The city was founded in 1956, and the first major group to move to the city were Moroccan Jews.

In the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, this was the northermost advancement point of the Egyptian army, a mere 30 kilometers from Tel Aviv, and heavy fighting took place for several months.

Sister cities: Bordeaux (France), Spandau (Germany), Tampa (USA), Bahia Blanca (Argentina).

A recent wave of explosive population growth took place in the 1990s with the arrival of more than 100,000 immigrants from the former Soviet Union.
