Merely a suggestion, take one steps backwards away from the screen, for a better comprehensive view:
Discovered accidently on a gravel hill, in the early 1950th, on the outskirts of the ancient town of Caserea. Only in 2004 was completely excavated, opened to public, and it’s the first time for me to see this place:
Called Birds Mosaic hill, is a 6th cerntury built Byzantine palace with a marvelous mosaic floor on what was the main living-room of a big villa.
At first it was thought to be a church, later realized that it belonged to a rich Christian family who lived there, when verified findings on the premises.
The two story villa was destroyed on a fire in 641AD, when the Arabic era begun, than abandoned. (Source: Wikipedia).
The mosaic floor has an abundance of animals and birds depicted: Flamingos, Pelican, ducks, peacock, a fox, dog, oryx and more.
In the WS1 there is an inclusive view of the mosaic floor.
Two more WS's with more mosaic sections from the palace floor.
Location on map: 32.5056, 34.9035

Une note intéressante et trois belles versions de la mosaique de différents animaux, triste sort de cette villa pris par l'incendie, elle devait être riche en détails et très spéciale en en voir les WS, c'est vraiment très beau, belle présentation

I immediately thought that this was Roman.
I wonder how they decide upon the creators of the mosaics. The examples that I have seen before have all been Roman.
I love the circular patterns, so carefully designed so that they connect by twisted loops. It is easy to recognise various birds, still familiar to us today.
You are right, it does give a better overall view slightly set back.
My warm regards,

The point of view is showing with precision the details and the colours of the mosaic floor. It is well preserved. The surrounding light has a good effect on the colours. Have a nice day.

Good discovery and good frame to show the beautiful mosaic on the floor, what an excellent artwork made by the ancient people, interesting composition, distinct photo, good shoot.

Very impressive animal mosaics from the Byzantine style and still remarkably in decent shape. The craftsmen ship is obviously superb, and your view captures it.

No matter the size or material, I have always found mosaics to some of the most interesting and impressive works. This is quite the handy work of a skilled laborer(s) to come up with this fine collection of images and placed in these circular patterns.
I like this angle you've taken, it shows us a great deal of the layout and creates a nice diagonal across the frame for added emphasis. The detail and textures are strong, and there's even light throughout making every portion clearly visible. Thanks for sharing this fascinating ensemble. Have a great day ahead.
kato (11630) 2014-01-21 19:58
You're capturing well this mosaic floor by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the stone floor on which the figure of many kinds of birds is depicted in the circle. Although I does not know whether it is a hobby of an owner of those days, it looks like an owner with deep knowledge at fine arts.

hello Ike, Nice mosaic from Cesarea. I see here peacock, flamingo and goose. There are some damages but quite well preserved. You rarely go somewhere from Haifa so I am glad to see you latest photos. I was in Cesarea in pre-digital times and I found it fascinating, so I am looking forward to seeing more photos.
Warm regrads Malgo

Superb mosaic detail photo. It is interesting what the people created in the past. Today nobody would be willing and able to pay for it. Discovered in 2004, who knows what else is still hidden underground around us. Thanks for posting this interesting image.

a lovely and interesting presentation of these elegant ancient mosaics. It's a pity parts of them are destroyed but what you are showing us in this and the workshop pictures is wonderful. I like very much the perspective of this photo, the art of the mosaics is so fine. I appreciate very much the excellent sharpness of your presentation as well as the natural colours. A very special place for sure. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

I love mosaics, so much so that I did a course on how to make mosaic tables. But nothing I could ever make could equal these beautiful ones! I like the angled pov and the close up. The details of the mosaics are beautiful, and what I find amazing is that they survive in all their beauty 2000 years later. They remind me of the mosaics I saw in Pompei and the Archeological Museum in Naples. Excellent photo and note to accompany it.
Thank you also for your kind note and email regarding my mamma. I have read every note out from my friends here and she is thrilled to know that there are people sending positive thoughts to her from the other side of the world. She has gained strength from this and asks me to thank you.

Nice image of the floor birds. It is hard to believe that people from so many centuries back had such advance taste for floor decoration with great symmetry and geometrical evenness. TFS.
danos (102514) 2014-01-23 8:29
very nice the shape of the birds on the mosaic floor with the traces of the fire to are seen perfectly.I admire all these ancient artist that works with all these small and colourful pieces of stones to create these 'paintings'.As you know Greece have a lot of them especially in ancient Palaces.

I can't imagine the masons' perseverance of by then; cutting all those tiny blocks of different stone material to match the wanted colors must had been a laborious challenge!
Thanks for showing this resurrected piece of art.
mkamionka (39803) 2014-01-28 7:50
very interesting mosaic indeed. You have here the benefit of the repeated motif with each circle showing a different bid though. Obviously people in the past were into bird watching as well :)
Very well done,
daddo (27756) 2014-01-31 4:23
Shalom. I suppose that the little crosses might have given the clue about the owners. So much work in making these images. The workshop no1 photo reveals beautiful geometric designs as well. Regards. Klaudio.

Spotted this in your gallery and its superb. The tile mosaic birds are fascinating and I can make out a duck, peacock, flamingo or ibis, and a tree and a goat top left. Nice repetition of the circular patterns with good sharpness. Tfs.
