Another view of the market area in Basra, just a month or so before Iraq invaded Kuwait.

I think that the wooden buildings were from the Ottoman period.

Once again, maybe not the best photo, shot on print film during the middle of the day, but perhaps of historical interest.

Here is an earlier post of the same area

Hi,

I like those wooden houses, so, yes, this is certainly worth being posted. The title in combination with this picture has something eerie to it. Only warmongers prepare for war, the others just pray.

Hi Steve.
A great documentary style shot, full of details but with strong focal point in the boy. Very well handled exposure considering the bright light and shadow, and with great sense of perspective. Good scanning job. It certainly has historical interest and one wonders what that street looks like today, after another war, whether those interesting looking houses are still intact. Well done.
Regards,
Andrew

Hi Stephen,
Very interesting shot from time actually not so old, but so much has happened after that. Bay windows remind of Mediterranean, although these are clearly not in very good condition. Midday heat is apparent. Kids look so innocent. I can't help but wonder what this place looks today. Better exposure than your previous Basra shot.

Hello Steve,
I totally agree that the contents of a picture, the composition and the information it provides are more important than just focusing on technical perfection. I honour those ideals every day ;-)
In this picture I like the old Turkish-style architecture and the sight of the children being out in the mid-day sun. It's only 18 years old but already a historical document.
Best wishes,
Gert

Hi Steve, I've looked at this shot several times & at length not because of it's quality but for it's content. I've read the other comments & your reply, it's certainly one worth posting if only for the comments it has generated. All I can think of is that it's a shame it is not still standing & equally a shame the we can not walk around like you did 18 years ago & see for ourselves.
Thanks
Santo
