As unexpected as the unscheduled early return of power to the Iraqi government, so was the dismantling of the security barrier leading the way to the hotel.
Here, a small portion of a much larger group (off screen to the right) of Iraqi citizens interact with members of an Oregon National Guard unit attached to the 1st Cavalry.
Behind them, the object of attention, a barrier that was lined with razor wire is being methodically disassembled and removed. For those that would say this turnover is a symbolic gesture, I'm here to tell you, it's real and it's happening right now!

Great composition on this shot Bill!! Most people would have recorded it head-on, but I like the angle you have chosen, it shows a much more human situation. You are doing quite well with the new camera. Before long it will be like an extension of yourself!
I appreciate that you are documenting history and you are not manipulating your images. Photographing under difficult circumstances both technically and personally.
Thank you, stay safe and God Bless!

Great picture, Bill, not only because of the story it recalls, but also the details, the 2 GIs, behind the group of men, discussing at ease, the nice shadow of this tree, protecting people from the harsh heat : Orient at its best, and also, very important, thit little touch of red, this candy-wrap...It reminds me of the pictures after the D-Day, in june and july 1944 when the Allieds were arriving in villages, in Normandy, giving away chewing-gums, chocolate-bars to kids who were, welcoming theese tall strange men like liberators. First shot I see of those poor American soldiers in Irak as "liberators", of course, we don't see what's behind and around, but it's this moment that counts, and it southes our mixed-feelings minds.
